Default Discarding race/class during combat

My friends and I are new to munchkin and now play every weekend, but there are some rules we are curious about. So far we have played where you can NOT discard your race/class during combat because it seems more fun when you flip over something that screws your race/class.
I was wondering if other people play this way, or if we should try playing with the published rules.

Seeing as the published rules support the theme of an RPG player who'll do anything to win (even change his character's Race or Class in the middle of a gaming session in order to do better in combat), which is what the game is about, I tend to prefer using the published rules. . .
