A cheap poorly balanced weapon is already -0.8 CF, or $10 for a Kukri-sized one, $40 for a small Falchion-sized, $80 for Falchion-sized.

A machete isn't "cheap" in the GURPS sense. Affordable yes, "cheap" no.

Depends on the machete. If you want a cheap machete, you can certainly find one. I'm pretty sure the 26" machete priced at $13.95 I found with a minute or two of searching online is 'cheap' in GURPS terms...

Sure. At Wal-Mart. :-)

But a working agricultural machete made by IMACASA, INCOLMA, Hansa, Bellotto, Tramontina etc, and sold in a central or south American hardware store for a couple bucks is a whole 'nother beast entirely.

Alternately you can find some people that do very good but very small scale bespoke work. The guy who made Good Argument, my replica of the Sword from the River Suck is one of the best on the West Coast (he's easily the equal of Swatton and has made swords for some of the same Hollywood films as Tony). I paid a positively criminally low amount for it, because he waved most of the price as a wedding present. However he's taken down his website, and isn't doing any more custom work for strangers. I doubt he's the only guy like that in the world though.

So it's more a case of market glut/need and trickle down that keeps precision machetes inexpensive in Latin America? Like pistols going for very little cash in certain urban areas?

For gurps note that the price in game terms is value rather than actual cash doled out then? Okay, thanks.

Machetes (all cutlery really) are items that benefit greatly from modern manufacturing pricewise.

Ok, lets look at this $10 Gavilan/Incolma imported by Tru-Spec out of Atlanta.
http://www.smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce...NS5736000.html

It is heat treated to a hardness that is optimal for its intended use and that heat treat is done with extreme consistency in large batches, dozens of blades at one time.

The blades are distally tapered for balance but that taper is part of the sheet steel they are stamped from.

The functionally indestructible, ergonomically ideal grips are molded on en masse.

Machetes intended for the "real" agricultural market are usually sold in an unfinished, unsharpened state, this further keeps costs down.

That sounds like rules that should be made official somewhere other than just the TL X allowing fine for base cost.
Mass produced, unsharpened, "tool" weapons giving huge negative cost modifiers.
Shortswords are assumed to be $400 for good or fine at modern TLs.

The machete being linked to is probably a long knife/small falchion, not a shortsword, but the price difference between 18" and 24" isn't that huge.

Oh yeah, there is a large price difference in gurps knives and slightly longer short swords. I forgot that and didn't check the machete size.
