Default Portals

Hello.

At our game-circle people said that portals were confusing and that there weren't any good tutorials on how to use them.
Where can I read more about Portals and how to use them?

I think we both have portals in the board game, and in the original card game.

The Portals in the board game are completely different from and unrelated to Portals from Munchkin 6, the rules for which, I feel, are rather descriptive on how to use them. I'll need to know to which Portals you are referring before we can continue.

Then this question belongs in the Munchkin Quest forum, not here, so I'll be moving it. . .

The rules sheet for the Portals found in Portal Kombat can be found here. I'm not sure how to sum them up other than to say that if there are two or more Portals on the board of the same color, you can go through one Portal to one of the rooms on either side of one of the Portals of same color. You also can just treat the link as a standard hallway, rather than travel to another Portal. I think the graphic on page 2 describes things pretty well.

I think one thing that is confusing about Portals is the idea of Line of Sight introduced in MQ2 (for example the use of the Telescope's size changing powers). Like the rules say, a portal passage can be treated like open passageways. They also make any room adjacent if they are connected to portals of the same color (or the rainbow ones). When our group plays, we consider those connections to also allow line of sight as well. Everything else going through the portal (thrown items, helpers, etc) can choose to go through the portal, why can't that line drawn through it to find LoS also be affected? It's not a monster line...is it? This one little idea makes some very interesting sight checks, especially near the end.

In any case, I guess we're looking for an "official" ruling from those that designed these systems. What was the original intention of this interaction? Does the distinction of adjacent through a pair of portals allow for line of sight between the rooms or is viewing through the portals blocked because of the swirly pattern of the portal? :)

Portals are treated as ordinary open passageways for purposes of Line of Sight. You cannot gain LOS through a Portal to any rooms you couldn't get LOS to if the Portal were just an ordinary passageway.

Can anyone explain what the dot on the portal link is for?

"The small dot on the side of a Portal link indicates the color of the Portal on the other side."

The rules state that you can portal between any of the links with the same color in the middle, so what is the color on the small dots used for?

There is at least one card that lets you flip a Portal link to the other side. The small dot tells you what you'll get if you do.

So the answer was in the sentence... Duh! :)

"The small dot on the side of a Portal link indicates the color of the Portal on the other side."

Would been easier to understand that it means the other side of the link if that was stated in the rules. Not the portalcolor inside the game...

Is there a reason the dot is there, instead of just flipping the link physically and see what's on the other side?
