Very true. That's why I said Conan type. More generally, heroes of Victorian adventure or pulp fiction are often shown as being capable fighters as a result of general all around athleticism, not years of training in a specific fighting system. There are exceptions (Rocky Balboa, Andre-Louis Moreau in Scaramouche) but Western type adventurers tend to have overall physical competence rather than focused training.
