Captain-Captain brought this up in Geeks Rule, but as he noted, the implications for In Nomine are fairly obvious. First, read:

Now, discuss. Who's likely to be behind this one? Kobal? Vapula? Lilith? Maybe even Marc? (They did get a refund, after all, and a lesson in reading fine print closely.) Or just some random human or ethereal that leaves both Heaven and Hell shaking their heads?

Any Demon Prince would have kept the souls, then claimed them from Asmodeus when the time came. "I have a contract. That soul is mine."

Marc is the Archangel of Trade, not the Archangel of Gratitude Toward People Who Read The Fine Print. He might have returned the souls, but he wouldn't have given gift certificates to the people who did read the T&Cs.

If any Superior is responsible for this, it's the one who has an interest in keeping people safe from their own short-sightedness - the Archangel of Protection, Zadkiel. But this isn't her style...

I'd have to say this is one of the many things that humans did on their own. It's just benefiting a few Word-bound, is all.

Good points, Rob. On the other hand, I seem to remember a saying about taking the king's shilling ... could it be that the stinger isn't in the contract, but in the five-pound note itself?

Picture all those five-pound notes, worked into minor artifacts, released into the public in a perfectly laughable manner -- to what end? And if the experiment works, how long before whoever it is decides to start working with a larger sample of currency?

I believe "taking the King's Schilling" is a euphemism either for joining the military or working for the government. (Which, if it were the case here, would mean that Servitors of Laurence, Baal, or both have something to do with it... but that's more than a bit of a stretch.) And this is a digression from the actual thread...

True, in its literal sense, but I was thinking of the wording ... something about how the one who takes the king's shilling has to take his orders as well. In this case, I just meant to suggest that the "sold my soul" contract might have been some demon's idea of a joke; that the real purpose was to get a large group of people to accept some "enchanted" currency without questioning the source, in a way that would obligate them to the giver. Lilim, anyone?

So not that much of a digression ... compared to our usual feats, anyway. :)
