{Ethereal stuff} national personifications
I figure that Uncle Sam would be an ethereal spirit. I recently learned there was a figure known as Brother Jonathan who started as a symbol of New England.
Of course, John Bull was the symbol of Britain. Are there any other national personifications that anyone knows about? I'd be interested in seeing these things statted up using the Ethereal supplement if anyone is willing to give it a try. |

Re: {Ethereal stuff} national personifications
Marianne has been the personification of both France and Liberty since the Revolution, taking firm hold by the middle of the 19th century.
John Bull dates from the early 18th century. Martial Britannia predates him by fifty years on the coinage but may go back to Roman times. There is also the Lion of England. It's also possible that the three are different manifestations of the same ethereal. John Bull has a sister, Peg (Scotland) and there is also the Unicorn of Scotland. New Zealand has Britannia's daughter, Zealandia. Canada has Johnny Canuck, a lumberjack figure wearing a Mountie-style Stetson, dating from about Confederation, who is cousin to both John Bull and Uncle Sam. There is an unnamed female form, a young (teen/young adult) daughter of Britannia, who is sometimes identified with Kipling's Our Lady of the Snows. The U.S. also has a female spirit form, Columbia. |

The archives of the In Nomine list (currently offline) have Mr. President.
He's not any one President; he's the Idea of the President. |

And Mother Russia has a very powerful hold; even Stalin was quick to call on that image when the USSR was hard pressed in World War II.

here's the most common hundred or so
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_personification At one point I wanted to write a freeform set 1916 with these Ethereals trying to end WWI, but my editor's health collapsed. Last edited by Whitelaughter; 05-23-2019 at 12:08 AM. Reason: how did I fail to include the link? |
