Re: Why isn't GURPS as popular as the D20 system and games

And a good GM being able to do it for them is actually proof just the opposite - the GM hides the complexity. (Usually in an effort to hide GURPS inherent fiddliness, IME.) D&D GM's do the same thing. What it is is deception. Usually in the name of kindness, in either case. You're not kicking it down the curb, just hiding it from the player. But it's still complexity engaged with before play can begin. |

So comparing GURPS to D&D is really apples to oranges. GURPS is a system; D&D is a game. |

IMO hiding complexity (from players) and reducing complexity (for players) at time = t in exchange for increasing complexity (for players) at time > t is what "kicking it down the curb" means. My claim is simply a) where kicking it down the curb is built into the system, total complexity is increased (which is often a fine cost to buy a reduced learning curve) and b) where kicking it down the curb is built in, it is harder to reverse than it is where front-loaded is the default.

This definitely gave D&D a leg up in the adoption rates compared to GURPS. |

They thought when you listened to metal music and played D&D, you were a satanist.

And now I have a pastor who plays D&D with his kids. What a long way the hobby has come.
