Default Can you sidestep a ranged attack?

Assuming that you are aware of the attack being made and the vector from which it is being made, are you able to sidestepping dodge a ranged attack? (I know you can't retreating dodge a ranged attack.)

And if you can't get the sidestepping bonus then why not?

Retreating a ranged attack (in the line of fire) wouldn't make any sense, you still get hit.

A sidestep does make sense.

There is also anothic topic about high speed ranged attacks see here.

Sidestepping/Slipping are Retreat Options (MA123-4). As per B377 you can Retreat only for melee attacks. "“Retreat” is not a separate defense, but an option you may add to any active defense against a melee attack."

The only options extra option for ranged attacks is the Dodge and Drop, B377.

Sure. But why can't you use the side-stepping varient of retreating to benefit a dodge against a ranged attack?

Because Sidestepping is a Retreat and Retreat is only for melee attacks.

Because jumping out of the line of fire is what dodging a ranged attack is in the first place.

Brilliant!

Like Oneofmanynameless, I was wondering until I read this post. I best understand the rule now. Thank you Edges.

I wonder if requiring a sidestep would be a good candidate for a dodge. Hrm.

The rule in Basic Set predated the addition of Sidestep and Sideslip by some time. I suspect the Basic rule might have been worded differently had that not been the case, since Retreat-as-Sidestep makes perfect sense against ranged attacks.
