In today's market, I'm assuming PDF by default; it's whether there will be a print run that's the big question.

Well, not quite: "very close to being through the editorial process and ready for layout." Very close . . . relative to two months ago.

Global events make this impossible to guess.

Getting solid dates out of SJG tends to be like pulling teeth. They'll announce it when they're ready. :o)

Right now, we just don’t know. There are too many moving parts in this process — Kromm has to finish his edit, the layout could be simple or could pose challenges, we may need more art than we thought we did, and of course when all is said and done both Steve and the Foglios get to approve everything, which could well lead to another round of changes.

Plus there’s the wild card that any or all of us could be knocked on our keister for a couple of weeks by a pandemic.

As a generic rule, we don’t announce release dates until we’re very confident that we can hit them — for physical products, that almost always means that it has gone to the printer and we’ve gotten their estimate for how long manufacturing will take, and for digital products, that means we’ve got the thing staged or close enough to it that we’re confident in our upload strategy. We would much rather disappoint people by providing too little information than by providing BAD information.

I prefer to word that as, "Anybody promising solid dates on a multi-step book production process isn't as honest or as professional as SJ Games."

While the fans wait for the book, here's a question for them: For someone who has no idea what Girl Genius is (hi!) . . . what is it?

(I know, the answer is a Google search away. But it's always more fun to ask fans what a thing is.)

That's what I love about this company. They're willing to admit to uncertainty about coming products rather than let marketing set unrealistic deadlines. :)
