Re: [Space/Sci-Fi] I Need Some Names
Turns out that the Watery River (if we're meaning the same one) is a mistake; it's actually spelt Wateree which is the name of a Native American tribe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wateree_River Mistakes are, of course, another way that place names happen! :-D
"Lake Windermere" seems to be pretty well established now ("mere" being another word for a lake), although that one's a bit hard to avoid because it's a way to distinguish it from Windermere, the town. There's a village in Leicestershire that appears to have had this happen twice - Breedon on the Hill. Yes, "bree" and "don" both mean "hill".

There's also the famous Torpenhow, which may mean hill-hill-hill (but is more likely something like "top of a hill hill"). And as another example of how place names don't necessarily make any sense, Torpenhow is pronounced Trupenuh and the nearby village of Blennerhasset is pronounced Blenraysit, because apparently the locals just can't be bothered to say all those letters.

Re: [Space/Sci-Fi] I Need Some Names
In recent years it has become common (though it is not yet recognised officially) to call the hill outside Torpenhow "Torpenhow Hill".

Re: [Space/Sci-Fi] I Need Some Names
Things can also end up with odd names through the effects of time and technicalities. This is how I have come to live in the vicinity of the Indian River Lagoon.
If that's a little confusing this body of water that "looked" like a river to the early English speaking settlers turns out to be a long skiny tidal lagoon by modern technical definition. No, the change didn't go over well with the old folks.

Re: [Space/Sci-Fi] I Need Some Names
I think that's a deliberate choice by translators for place names. All around Japan you'll see the full name of the place in Japanese given before an English translation of the generic noun - such as signs for Yoyogi-koen Park (koen means park) or Meiji-jingu Shrine (jinja being shrine). It might seem redundant but it probably saves confusion with locals or taxi drivers.

Re: [Space/Sci-Fi] I Need Some Names
I always liked to use fertility goddesses from different cultures as the names of habitable planets.
Hera Gaia Sif Shakti etc. I also like to use classical references to regions for planets in which the initial colony landed in a place that evoked that region. Columbia -- a planet with an initial colony in a temperate rainforest Arcadia -- a planet with the initial colony in a lush, thick forest of giant trees Terra Colorojo -- the initial colony in a place with red-colored soil and sandstone permeated with iron oxides Albion -- a colony on a temperate, rainy island Galatia -- A colony in a fertile area perfect for agriculture, adjacent to a nearly-landlocked sea. Stuff like that.
