It's GURPSDay!

GURPSDay Summary Dec 29 – Jan 4, 2018

Shid ald akwentans bee firgot,
an nivir brocht*ti mynd?
Shid ald akwentans bee firgot,
an ald lang syn?

Welcome to the first GURPSDay of 2018, and the fourth year - GURPSDay started in February 2013, only a year after I started Gaming Ballistic.

We're currently drawing content from 96 blogs. We're still picking up some feed issues with them, but once they're solved, we're that much closer to having 100 GURPS blogs. GURPS Special Ops, by Steve Jolly, joined us this week.

We've got some interesting things coming in 2018. GURPSDay is often reshared and followed by some of the nice folks at Steve Jackson Games, and I made a suggestion to Kromm and Steven that has drawn some interest. One way or another, look to see the return of the monthly Blog Challenge - such as the Melee Academy feature. In particular, common challenges posed using nothing but the pre-gens from the DFRPG and the rules from the boxed set with no house rules or additions brought in. The Dungeon Fantasy RPG is targeted at new players, and so even seemingly old topics (how do I best leverage attacks from the rear hex? How do I fight a dragon? How do we fight a mob of weak creatures?) are fresh again.

We still need your help.*And if you just started a GURPS blog - and I know that some of you have - email me and get on the list! With the advent of the Dungeon Fantasy RPG, Powered by GURPS, there's even more reason to write.

So, one frequently looks back at older projects with more-experienced eyes and says: "Ugh. I could do that better now."

My very first book, GURPS Martial Arts: Technical Grappling is no different. It's the original basis for Dungeon Grappling, and that of course was the basis for my adventure Lost Hall of Tyr.

One if the things that's built into the book is a way to figure out what happens to folks if you grapple them by different body parts. If you grab an arm and a leg, well, you should be impeded. But maybe not as much as equally-strong grapples on the head and torso. In any case, the main book has an admittedly complicated method of resolving these secondary effects, called "referred control."

It's a good idea . . . in theory. At the game table, it's fiddle. Frankly, it'd be awesome with an app or spreadsheet. The prevalence of cell phones and PDAs would make that easy, actually.

But games mostly shouldn't require an app. You should be able to roll-and-shout if you wanna.

The Report to the Stakeholders hit my hopes hard, and sometimes it's hard to believe that a game that raised $175,000 and with over 1,500 backers could be called a "failure" by the company.

But it's all too easy to have that happen, and I wanted to see what a bit of ripping into estimated numbers might reveal.

Yup, loosing money is pretty easy. And that assumes that you can actually get the game into distribution everywhere that people will buy it. That seems to still work in the US, but I can quite see why SJG is focussed on the US market these days. My last couple of experiences of buying their non-Munchkin products through a local games shop in the UK involved a load of hard work, and delays of months.

A few more thoughts on the DFRPG post I did yesterday. Some more numbers, some reason for optimism, and a request for some noise.
