Default Gummi Golem and "magic items"

The Gummi Golem card says, "It would stick to your weapons . . . you must fight using your levels only, with no magic items."

What is a "magic item"? What exactly applies to the combat and what doesn't? Potions? Spells? Hirelings? Steeds? etc.

The card answers your question - "you must fight using your levels only."

So, only your level counts.

Can the monster's level be decreased with, say, a -5 to monster, which is not an item?

No, because the monster's Level never changes -- we revised those cards last year.

But you can play those cards, since they explicitly change the monster's combat strength, not yours.

So now I'm confused, maybe. The monsters level never changes. You can play a monster modifier card, however it will not change the level of the gummi golem. Is that right?

There is a difference between one's level and one's combat strength. Just like you could be say level 5, your combat strength would be that level 5 PLUS all the bonuses you get from items in play.

The same holds true for monsters, in this particular case you could still decrease its combat strength by using potions or enhancers on it. Its level (as depicted on the card) will never change however.

Okay so if the Gummi Golem is level X and you play a -5 to monster it's now fighting at an X-5 Combat Strength. Which is the way I've always played it but not using that wording for the monster. Thanks

So if the GG is lv 5 and you play a -10 to monster it will effectively have a 0 combat strength? ..or a 1 combat strength?

And I am pretty sure it can't go into negative but can it go to 0?

According to the rules: "1. Nothing can reduce a player below Level 1, although card effects might reduce a player’s or a monster’s combat strength (p. 2) below 1."

0 and negative numbers are below 1, so both are acceptable values for combat strength.
