Managing cards in-hand, in-play, and "backpack"
As long as I'm not in battle, can I swap an Item in play for an Item in my hand? In other words, can I put the in-play Item back into my hand?
Similarly, can I swap Items from my "backpack" to in-play, and vice versa (while not in combat)? |

You are never allowed to move cards from the table back to your hand (unless a specific card allows you to do so, of course).
You may equip or unequip Items at any time except when you are in combat. (There is no "backpack," except for cards that have Backpack in their name. Please don't use unofficial game terms in this forum.)

My apologies. I'm new to the game, and I'm using the terms that I've read elsewhere. So what do you call the "sideways" (not in-play) cards on the table? |

Unequipped Items. There really isn't a reason to call it something specific.
