I experimented with Cardboard Heroes but switched back to either counters or figures (depending on the game and circumstance) because I felt the stand up cardboard markers are sort of 'piggy in the middle' that retains the disadvantages of both (light and easily disturbed like cardboard chits; bulky and tricky to organize in crowded spaces like miniatures) without fully realizing the advantages of either.

I've thought about laminating the cardboard heroes sheets when I print them. But I haven't actually tried it yet.

I have a ton of the plastic stands from old BattleTech and they work just fine for home printed cardboard heroes. I've been using my original cardboard heroes since the mid 80 and still use them today. The bases are large enough to be stable and small enough to fit fully inside 1" hexes.

How good do cardboard heroes look if they are rescaled to a larger size when printed? The originals were about an inch high weren't they?

1.2 inches tall. You can double that from the PDF and they still look good.

Anyone have a good weight of cardstock that works best? For fitting in the stands if you have them? Or if you're using the built-in triangle format?

I use 65lb cardstock for my minis, lightly scoring the top with an Exacto-knife to fold, and using a glue stick to press the sides together. Then usually stack a couple books on them to make sure they're flat.

However, to fit the bases, I also laminate them with transparent Scotch tape (Exacto-knife to trim the excess).

I also use another company's bases for some figs, and they don't have quite as tight a fit as the Cardboard Heroes stands. So I glue an extra shiv of the cardstock in the bottom before folding them for a good fit.
