Default Classifying real world shields

It's often not easy to distinguish into which categories (small, medium or large as well as buckler or shield) a given real world shield should fall in GURPS.

Of course, the arrival of Cabaret Chicks on Ice will give us more accurate DR and HP stats for those types, but it does not necessarily have space to classify each and every historical shield.

So, what would the forums call the following shields?

Rodela/Rotella target shield. See also Rodela bucklers.

Viking Shields

I. 33 Metal Buckler

Particularly interested in the opinions of authors and playtesters of CCoI, as to how to model those.

See also this thread for styles and style perks for fighting with shields.

It is a medium shield. IIRC the rules for all-metal variants are in Companion 2.

It is a medium buckler. LT allows for "light" variants that have reduced DR and HP.

There is a specific entry in LT for a duelling buckler.

So the cut-off point between smaller and medium is, what? 20" or thereabouts?

I remember those being missing in the original manuscript.

Obviously, metal shields would be lighter than wooden/leather shield of comparative durability. Perhaps they also ought to have superior DR, though, even if the HP is based on weight.

So there is, but the description doesn't say if it is made out of metal or not.

Doesn't really matter. If you want to give the character a shield that is a little smaller then treat it as a small shield.

No, I'm just trying to figure out when to treat a given real world shield as a small shield and when as a medium shield.

LT says that a small shield is not much larger than the forearm.

So unless for a very large man, it's probably 12" or less in diameter.

Thanks, that's helpful.

I would classify a large shield as anything big enough to cover neck to shin.

This is helpful.

Dan, would you say that metal shields should have higher DR than wood and leather ones?

And what about quality for shields? Does CCoI include rules for those?

For example, I expect that a flat-topped buckler is both easier to construct and has less DR than a domed, convex-shaped one.
