Off-hand torch adjustment
When using an off-hand torch (as seen at ITL 45, 62, etc.) is the restriction at ITL 124 "will not initiate HTH combat" too strong?
How about a +1 on the defender's HTH reaction roll instead?

I'd just give the -2DX due to fear of the flame.

What's wrong with RAW? I can't really see a wolf attacking someone who is brandishing a torch in their face.

Re: Off-hand torch adjustment
I don't like the rules determining behavior too much. If animals won't go into HTH with those holding torches, a simple torch provides compelte protection from rats and bats. Animals like bears and wolves are pretty intelligent, and are likely to be driven to attack even something they fear if they think they can win. Just imagine a wolf coming at someone from behind. Is the torch really going to be that much of a deterrent? I doubt it. I don't mind guidelines for behavior, but absolute statements really tie a GM's hands. For the same reasons, way back when in these very forums, I argued against someone advocating for animals like bears and wolves to pretty much automatically opt for HTH.

Re: Off-hand torch adjustment
I don't think an animal is going to behave much differently based on which hand a human holds a torch.
I'd also tend to mentally add the words "tend to" to the behavior description, unless trying to play strictly RAW. |

Re: Off-hand torch adjustment
Animals will also behave in unexpected ways if they are stressed in some way.
Injury and hunger come to mind as reasons an animal will risk something it would normally avoid.

I agree with this - and I would add, the setting is Fantasy, you know I hear Saratugan Wolves will actually eat torches, they like the tingle on their teeth.
