Imo, the main issue here is that 'popular' is THE concept since mass democracy and i think we need to be proud that GURPS isn't 'popular' in this way.
Since 'free markets' it's a fact that games are developed for a broader public. Since then, the 'mainstream' was expanded in a great way. People want games where the thinking is being done already and where the player i a passive 'entertainment' consumer and isn't challenged to expand or explore another mindset.

That's not only why GURPS shouldn't be popular, that's why we needn't be popular ;)
