Rather the reverse, I think. It's been ... a while since I read them, but when Caramon went back in time he got trained in the Arena, and by my impression it was the first formal training he'd had and seriously boosted his technique, before that he'd been a brute force kind of fighter (though of course, he was the brute squad)

Well that weakens my point, I never saw any of the modules (though can still find my AD&D Dragonlance Adventures, and even saw a brand new copy in a store a few months ago, that's seriously old stock)

It's routinely mentioned in the novels that the companions all served as mercenaries at some point or another. During the War of the Lance, they all easily accomodate themselves into various military formations, with no problems. This would indicate to me that they have some form of military experience. They may not be professionals, but they atleast have a point in them.

Flint is an exile from the Dwarves, who accordingly trained all their populace as soldiers. That's been D&D canon for ever, and one of the reason why dwarven 0-level NPCs were as capable of Hobgoblins.

He's definitely not the most perceptive or clever of the party. I'm not willing to give him more than IQ 10, and I think IQ 9 is more in line. And Str 18/63 in GURPS terms is MASSIVE. An Ogre has 18/00, and those things are 8 feet tall and several hundred pounds. Caramon is almost that strong. He's skilled enough to go up against several minotaurs.

Saying that his experience in the Arena is indicitive of him being an unskilled perosn by GURPs standards is ridiculous. The first book of War of the Twins pointso ut that Caramon had allowed himself to waste away, he had gotten fat, unfit and lost much of his skill by being a drunk. Tasslehoff notes this at several points. In the Arena, he's selected as a slave not just because of his size, but because the headmaster sees that he's a skilled man, whose just let himself go. War of the Twins is also where we see Caramon becoming someone capable of independent thought.

Maybe he doesn't have low IQ, maybe he's just hidebound and dependent on other people, especially his brother. Because he even reflects on how he had always let Sturm and Tanis handle those things.

No, a first level fighter IS an experienced fighter. The 1st edition DMG clearly covers this, stating that 2nd level fighters would be an extremely rare and effective military formation, something similar to the Companions of Alexander. These are established Genre conventions for AD&D.

No adventure I ever ran or read subscribed to this. Game mechanic-wise, a first level fighter is little better than a 0-level human. In 3e, he's barely better than a first level warrior.

I don't see a good reason to change this; at worst, there are multiple valid interpretations. You're welcome to type up your own stats.

Well, yes. Luckily I said no such thing.
I suggested that as (ISTR) the Arena was his first formal training then before that Trained By A Master wouldn't make sense.
Also that before that training he relied more on strength than skill. That doesn't mean low skill, just that since (as you point out) his strength is incredibly impressive he didn't need the skill level of the others to be just as competant & dangerous.

You may well be right. It's been something like 15 years since I read War of the Twins so misremembering wouldn't be a shock, maybe he was just getting back to where he'd been rather than getting better than at his peak. And I had forgotten the whole drunkeness problem.

Still working on character writeups, and following from that, racial templates. I've got the Kender to go then I'll post those.

Rasputin, those first three writeups were very interesting, even if I deviate some - I'd love to see more of them :-)

I remember reading something in the forward to the first "compendium" of the first 3 novels:

TSR gave Weiss and Hickman specific stats to work with for each character name. Raistlin's constitution: 5. It took them a while to figure out how to handle that stat for a character who could actually survive a trip around the countryside. Their solution was the tea that he's always drinking in the books.

I have avoided (Improved) Magic Resistance, and insted tried to use Resistant as the basis for the various save bonuses and resistances of the races. This is then coupled with taboo traits against wizardry for dwarves and kender.
