Default Doors and open passages

What is the difference between a door and an open passage way? According to the rules as I read them, you put the links down randomly. They both cost one move and the area on throwing things says you can open a door to throw something in.

One difference is that some monsters cannot move through different types of doors.

Phil's correct, right now the only time Regular Doors are different from Open Passageways is for Monster movement.

But the expansion adds an item that makes them matter in a different way...

Well, technically, there is a card in the basic set that works on doors, but not on passageways. So there is a difference in the basic set as well.
