Major Boothroyd ("Q") does personally do quite a few of the gadgets, according to his dialogue about the jackpot ring and the voice-impersonator in _DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER_ (film). ("Put one of these together for the kids at Christmas.") |

Re: Gadgeteer: List of Fictional Gadgeteers
I'd add Buckaroo Banzai to the list. We don't see many of his gadgets, but the one we do see is rather impressive . . . and he figures out how alien tech works (even flying one of their aircraft) . . . and he's also a neurosurgeon, nuclear physicist, etc. . . . and in the comic-book/story-bible canon, a whole lot more. It's just that in the movie, he's a classic PC who wants to mess with guns and swords rather than invent things.

For villainous gadgeteers, don't forget the Tinkerer. This guy turns everyday items into other villains' weapons - and some of his stuff defies explanation.

Oscar Goldman from "The Six Million Dollar Man".
Lots of episodes involved his amazing inventions other than bionics. |

I have to add my wife's favorite, Barney Collier from the old Mission Impossible series. Everything was a custom build and often years ahead of its time. (He had a computer beating chess grandmasters before IBM did!)

Re: Gadgeteer: List of Fictional Gadgeteers
A few quickies that popped up from the memory banks-
Graeme Garden from The Goodies Wallace from Wallace and Gromit Caractacus Potts from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang The making of breakfast seems to be a task that weighs heavily on the mind of gadgeteers, the last two both had Rube Goldberg-like set-ups for making it. Wile E. Coyote from The Road Runner Show Dr Moreau - a biological Gadgeteer, re-imagined as a genetic Gadgeteer in the recent film The Time Traveller from HG Wells' Time Machine - although we might class him as a One Gadget Only Gadgeteer

Re: Gadgeteer: List of Fictional Gadgeteers
Taking another look at some Bond villains:
Dr No - Has a private atomic reactor and an atomic-powered radio beam. Hugo Drax from Moonraker- Has a private fleet of space shuttles as well as a massive cloaked orbital space station. Karl Stromberg from The Spy Who Loved Me- Has a hi-tech underwater base and a tanker ship that can open up to capture and contain up to 3 nuclear submarines. Blofeld from You Only Live Twice (in particular)- Has a secret base hidden in a volcanic crater, and can privately deploy a space rocket that can capture other space vehicles. Most of the other Bond films have similar arch-enemies, but these 4 are enough to make my point. It's not clear that all of these guys are Gadgeteers (though they are described as being geniuses), but as heads of evil organisations or corporations they're able to achieve the production of gadgets and super-tech. Maybe they could be written up using an advantage called Organisational Gadgeteer- the character is the head of an organisation that can create advanced technology, super science technology, or technology that is usually only accessible to large national governments. The primary skill for an Organisational Gadgeteer is not an engineering or science skill, but Administration (for secretly obtaining suppliers, real estate and equipment) and Leadership. Q and Nick Fury might also qualify for such an advantage. Any Patron or Patron Group with access to technology beyond that of the setting would have this advantage too. Would this be a useful trait, or would it be better just to write it up as a combination of high IQ, Rank, Patron, High TL and sundry skills?

It's been a long time since I've seen any of that program, but I can't remember him being any kind of inventor -- I thought he was just an administrator and Dr. Rudy Wells invented Bionics.

D'oh. It's been a long time since I watched it as well. I must have gotten the two confused. I'm horrible with names; and I was so proud of myself for finally remembering one all on my own.
