How does this work for swords though. Most cuts seem to come on the diagonel, which means that they very well may be able to swing above the headspace of an occupied hex, before hitting their actual intended target.

There a vertical hex ranges too, and this would work fine as long as you didn't have a low ceiling. Downward cuts ought to get a damage bonus but take longer to set up.
