Default Re: Campaign: ARK Comedy Devolved

Session 1

It started in the middle of May. Shortly after noon on a Thursday. The game began, simply enough, at a franchised fast food join (Durr Burger), in a city in California.

Kay, was sitting alone in a small, two-person booth and noticed a bunch of people running down the street, toward the west.

Ruby: “It’s a flash Mob”
GM: “It’s a flash-ER mob.”
Kay: “I will stop watching the mob.”

Richard Kane was holding up a serving line by trying to convince the kid behind to counter to “Irish up his coffee” for him. Ruby was standing behind him, trying to decide what to do, when a call comes over her radio, indicating a disturbance at 7th and Conoco, about two blocks to the east. Ruby grudgingly answers the call and goes to head out.

Kay stared, slack-jawed, as a triceratops came charging down the street. She then pulled out her camera and began filming everything.

It was at this point, I’m pretty sure, I lost complete control of the game.

Everyone in the joint moved quickly to the windows to see what was going on. Ruby called for backup, requesting animal control and heavy artillery. Kay pointed out that animal control would be way out of their league.

Ruby ran out of the building, heading for her cruiser to try to distract the seven-and-a-half ton animal. The light, reflecting off of the doors must have angered the trike, as it charged her. She managed to clear the vestibule moments before the creature slammed into it.

She cleared another car as the enraged dinosaur wheeled around and tried to slam into the car, only to slip in a puddle of oil, and lose its footing.

Kay, deciding that Randy Shoop (from TSHiggins' Facets game) is a role model, rushed out of the building and climbed onto the disoriented dinosaur as it got back to its feet. Ruby took this time to climb into her cruiser and try to use it, her sirens, the other car and the building to pen the creature in until backup could arrive.

The trike was furious with something on its back and struggled to dislodge Kay. After a series of phenomenal rolls, Kay managed to stay on the back of the trike and even get the creature under a semblance of control. Ruby insisted that Kay get off the trike and get somewhere safe.

GM: “Okay, let me sum up: It’s about 12:45 on a Thursday afternoon in May. You’re holding onto the frill of a Triceratops you saw running down the street. And you're hooting like a maniac.”
Kay: “It’s the best day of my LIFE!”

Rick sat alone in the now deserted fast food joint and watched the ensuing chaos while trying to get ahold of Stephen Spielberg.

Only after a few moments, they noticed a stegosaurus moving toward the police car. As it got closer, and Ruby tried to chase it off with the car’s horn, the stegosaurus got angry and swung its tail spikes into the light bar, wrecking the top of the car and slightly injuring Ruby.

With the stego’s tail embedded in the car, Ruby lost control and slammed into the building, running over Rick and pinning him under a table. This also wrecked the car (it was a critical failure).

Writer: “POLICE BRUTALITY!”

With the annoying sound gone the stego forgot what was going on and began meandering back down the road.

Ruby pulled herself out of her car and helped extricate Rick from the table, radioing for backup and medical responders. Oh, and some police helicopters. The only response she got was “you and everyone else . . ..” From the outside, she could hear Kay shout out something about fliers.

Ruby and Rick both managed to look out the window to see pteranodons flying around “fencing” with news helicopters. The group knew that, down the street, to the east, the way the dinosaurs were coming from, was the Museum of Natural History.

Kay managed to get the trike pointed in that direction as she knew that, across from the museum, was a large park. She wanted to get the trike somewhere that there was a lot of food for the creature, hoping that would calm it. She knew the next closest park was eight or more blocks away and kept that in mind.

As they approached the museum, Kay noticed a scintillating rainbow field surrounding the museum, and watched as a brachiosaurus appear and step out of the rainbow field, walking toward the park. The enormous creature took little notice of the small creatures around its feet and simply began eating a “short” tree nearby.

Noticing the impact tremors caused by the brachy, Ruby and Rick decided to abandon the fast food joint and head to the museum as that seemed to be the source of the disturbance. Ruby did take the time to recover her shotgun, first aid kit, as many zip-ties as she could get (for restraining Kay, later), and road flares from her car.

Kay managed to direct the trike into the park where it began devouring a hedge, which had a calming effect on the creature. Kay was able to release her death-grip on the trike’s frill and pulled her camera back out. She saw numerous dinos eating the plants in the park. A pair of parasaurolophus were giving off agitated hoots as they drank from the pond—the water didn’t seem to agree with them.

Kay pointed her camera at the building to capture the rainbow field and filmed it for a moment, before she noticed movement inside. It took her a moment to spot armed lizardmen moving around inside the museum and attacking the people inside. She tried to direct the somewhat placated trike to move toward the museum, but the dino wasn’t having any of it.

About this time Ruby and Rick managed to catch up. Kay’s waving caught Rick's eye as Ruby was fixated on the rainbow field around the museum. Kay gestured toward the museum, and Rick directed Ruby toward it.

They saw a pair of people run, screaming from the museum. Pursued by a pack of five lizardmen. The lizardmen were not humanoid, more like human-sized Tyrannosauruses (just with longer, stronger arms, and opposable thumbs).

In true horror movie fashion, the girl tripped when they got to the stairs (rolled a 16 on her DX check). The guy made it down the stairs until one of the lizardmen threw a spear and caught him in the middle of the back. Ruby yelled at the lizardmen to drop their weapons, who promptly threw spears at her. Even at this great distance, Ruby had to shove Rick out of the way and dodge as the lizardmen were dead-on accurate.

Ruby returned fire with her sidearm, but didn’t hit them.

The gunfire, however, did spook the dinos in the park. The parasaurolophus ran away from the sound, followed by several slower dinos. Kay’s trike turned toward the noise (the only thing it knew that was that loud was certain predators, and it was preparing to fight back). It spotted the lizardmen, let out an angry roar and charged them. Kay, holding on for dear life, closed her eyes.

GM: “You can see that the psychopath is clenched from end to shining end.”

Two of the lizardmen noticed the charging, enraged triceratops, but only one was able to throw itself clear of the angry dino. Three were impaled by its horns and a fourth was trampled to death under it.

Ruby and Rick rushed forward to help the humans as the lizardman scurried away, back into the museum.

They watched, in surprise, as the trike hit the rainbow field and disappeared. The clenched Kay did not notice at first, until the temperature changed to hot with oppressive humidity. When she opened her eyes, she saw a massive circular, metal platform behind her with a single, small pylon standing in the center. The entire platform was covered in a rainbow energy field, like the museum. The trike was slowing down, and Kay tried to get it to turn, but quickly lost what she was doing as she saw an incredibly massive structure, floating above the platform, stretching into the sky. Silently hanging there in a very similar way to the way that bricks don’t.

Ruby called for an emergency medical evac and was again told that everyone was busy. Rick assisted the cute coed with her twisted ankle, and helped her to her feet. Ruby could see that there were more of the lizardmen inside the museum and it didn’t look pretty. As she yelled for them to drop their weapons and come out with their hands up, a horrible sound, like someone shoving a hotdog into a desk fan, came from behind and above them. Assuming a huge hot dog and a ridiculously over-powered desk fan.

Ruby: “Like helicopter blades?”
GM: “Bingo.”

ETA: Updated the writer's name to "Rick"

Default Re: Campaign: ARK Comedy Devolved

Rick wrestled a food vendor umbrella up to protect himself and the coed, Tabi, from the raining debris, only to see the smoking helicopter coming right for them. Tabi pointed and screamed. Ruby ushered them into the museum, but when they crossed the rainbow field, they were on the edge of the metal platform. Rick and Tabi collapsed from confusion while Ruby spotted the confused Kay on the trike a little ways off.

Kay snapped out of her awe and began filming the dinosaur in its “natural” environment, spotting a small heard of trikes a little way off. Kay waved to Ruby and the others, then her heart sank when she saw the energy field covering the platform disappear. Ruby, facing away from the field, heard the steady thrumming of the platform go silent.

Kay continued to film and watch the heard of trikes. After several moments of watching them, she spotted one wearing a riding harness. Deciding that a trike with a saddle was better than one without, decided to try to dismount her trike and go ride the other.

Failing her DX check found her falling face first into a pile of dino poop. Because of course it did.

Ruby, giving first aid to Rick and talking Tabi down from her hysterics gave a polite, if karma-appreciating, laugh. While the fall did no damage to Kay (other than her ego), it did break her camera.

Kay managed to get over to the saddled trike and, with barely any coaxing, got it to let her climb on. She noticed that this trike was larger than her original one, and seemed calm and collected. She dubbed it “Pod” and turned the trike toward Ruby and the others.

Ruby told her to keep it away. Kay explained that she didn’t know what else was around and they were exposed on the ground while she had a dinosaur that might be able to keep them safe.

With the sun almost directly above them, Kay looked around and noticed they were in a slight depression. In the direction she dubbed north (due to a flat part of the pylon), there was a mountain range, all around them, otherwise, were “jungled” hills. She remembered the quadcopter in her pack. She and Ruby discussed it, and while Ruby didn’t want to leave in case the field turned back on, they realized that they didn’t have anything to survive with. Kay hopped off Pod who took a few steps and began eating a nearby plant.

Kay’s fall did some minor damage to the quadcopter, so she set to repairing it, while Ruby looked the trike over. Ruby noticed a rifle in a sheath on the trike and set to examining the entire harness, discovering it held quite a bit of stuff that Kay, in her enthusiasm to ride a dinosaur, had overlooked.

After several false-starts, Kay got her quadcopter airborne and did some scouting. When Tabi saw the massive structure floating above them, she passed out. It was not her day. After a bit of scouting, Kay noticed a column of smoke in the distance. After some discussion, they decided it was their best bet. The trio (and unconscious girl) climbed aboard the massive triceratops, Pod, and Kay pointed him toward the direction of the smoke.

Ruby noticed that Pod’s harness was as much armor as it was a saddle. Also, his horns were reinforced with metal. The big creature had some long-healed scars and seemed noticeably larger than other triceratops that they had seen. Pod was also not skittish. Sudden movements would get its attention, but never seemed to disturb it.

They plodded along for a while, until they broke through a tree line onto what could only be considered a path. Kay pointed Pod down the “correct” path and they continued walking. While the trike wasn’t plodding much faster than on foot, the trike never seemed to tire or get upset. Which could not be said for Kay, who, after a couple of hours of the rhythmic rocking of the walking trike fell asleep. Ruby, discovering this, jabbed her, hard, in the soft spot of the ribs.

Writer: “You’re pretty good at this police brutality thing.”
Kay (OOC): “No more goat soup!”
Ruby: "Just because I have a Police Code of Honor doesn't mean I have to like it."

As the sun was going down (and they decided to dub the direction the sun was going “west”) they encountered another, mounted, triceratops. The rider was a swarthy, Arabic looking man who was wide-eyed with the character’s bizarre clothing.

He spoke a passible form of English, introducing himself as Gandu. He told the party they were very close to a trading outpost from the Stonehead clan where he had just been. He was now heading to a Sawtooth outpost. He answered a few more questions, directing them to Nisan, his city, and far to the south as the largest city around. He identified the skyscraper-sized non-brick-like structure that was still clearly visible behind them as “The First Pillar.” After a light info-dump, he continued on his journey with the closing statement “May the Pillar protect and guide you.”

It was only another thirty minutes before the party approached the gates to the Stonehead outpost. They noticed a few, torch-laden “Moai” along the road, with others carved into the gates. The walls had bow-and-arrow armed guards walking them while large, wooden palisades also defended them. As they got closer, they were able to determine that the “o” in “Stonehead” was the video game character “Bonk” from the TurboGrafx 16.

Not that any of the characters knew who he was, or what a TurboGrafx 16 was.

They were confronted by the guards about their business. While Ruby was talking Rick shouted out that he was there to drink, which got a laugh from the guards and they let them in.

As the doors opened and a guard led them to a pen for Pod, they noticed that the armor he wore, in the torch-lit light appeared to be some form of ceramic.

Kay struck up a conversation with one of the stable hands about where Pod’s armor might have come from. Glen, one of the stable hands, came over and checked the big creature out. He commented that Pod appeared larger than normal trikes, and seems to have seen his share of combat. He told them he wasn’t sure, but, the armor had been repaired a number of times so, it’s probably good the trike had it.

Ruby asked where Glen came from and he told her that he didn’t know. He had been here for about two years, but didn’t remember, other than glimpses and half-forgotten visions of a life before where he was.

He told them that there were three types of people here: Those who couldn’t remember anything before waking up here. Those, like him, who didn’t remember it clearly, but knew they had a life before this. And the unfortunate ones who had no idea how they got here, but clearly remember everything from before.

He admitted that the vague memories he had were all about animals, and he seemed to be very good with them, which is why he was working with them here at the outpost.

Ruby asked what he knew about the Pillar, and he admitted that he didn’t know anything. He suggested checking out the bar and asking around there for information. The vacuous sucking of wind as Rick sprinted to the bar knocked Kay into Ruby.

Ruby and Kay thanked Glen for his help and asked what they would owe for taking care of Pod. Glen told them not to worry too much about it, it wasn’t too much, and they could get money from trading at the bar. While Kay waked Tabi, Ruby gathered several of the items from the trike’s saddlebags (mostly to ensure that Kay wouldn’t get her hands on the weapons). The three women headed to the bar, discussing the implications of their possession of Pod.

Ruby: “We basically stole a car and parked it down the street. AND we stopped and asked for directions.”

The bar had the overall aspect of a movie version of a cowboy saloon. Complete with swinging doors. They noticed a painstakingly accurate, hand-carved “Budweiser” sign hanging above the bar. Additionally, the lights in the bar, impossibly, were incandescent bulbs.

Ruby asked, at the bar, how much to charge her cell phone. The bartender looked at the phone and shook his head, saying they didn’t have anything that would plug into it. Kay asked the same about her quadcopter, and was given the same answer. Rick showed them the plug and transformer from his laptop and was told that they could get a room with an outlet and it would be fine to charge his laptop.

The bartender realized they needed to trade for some money and had another tender go in the back and get their trader, Rudy. A small, beef-jerky-skinned cross between Yoda and Danny DeVito came out to talk with them.

And that is where the session ended. More to come.

Default Re: Campaign: ARK Comedy Devolved

Session 2,

This was much less goofy and much more cerebral.

Rick, Ruby and Kay got a crash-course in their new world’s economy from the trader, Rudy. He happily bought Rick’s (trademarked name removed) watch. Kay, having some experience fencing items, figured out that the price he gave him was fair, if low, and the only reason he would buy the watch was that he knew someone he would be selling it to later.

They discussed selling the pistol, rifle and other items taken from Pod’s bags. They discussed with Ruby about her selling her police-issue gun which she balked at. Rick, with some experience in older-styled weapons was able to convince her that, while he could use the gun, it wasn’t going to be that useful to them. And, since none of them knew how to really use the rifle, they should probably get rid of it.

Ruby: “Pirates of the Caribbean plus Flintstones, right?”

Rick then had to explain that there was no reason for them to sell everything to Rudy, as they might be able to get a better price for things in the future. Ruby sold a deck of playing cards to some of the bar patrons for the cost of a meal. They decided to sell the pistol and take the rifle and sword to the weapon smith in the morning. They got the money, paid for their meals and rooms. Kay and Tabi shared one room, while Ruby and Rick shared another.

Kay: “Just to let you know, that leaves the psychopath and the cheerleader alone in a room, together.”

Kay hooked up her laptop to charge her cell phone and see if she could repair her camera. She was able to download her footage, but unable to repair the internal damage. Ruby was able to log into her body camera from Rick’s laptop and download the footage, backing it up on her own thumb drive. Rick copied his hand-written notes into his laptop for a second level of backup. They all went to bed.

The next morning, Rick went down to the bar to talk to the patrons through the day and learn their stories, and Tabi stayed inside with him. Kay went out to look at the dinosaurs in the stables, filming them with her cell phone and seeing a trio of dire wolves in a separate pen as well. Ruby went to the tanner/weaver to see about local clothes.

Kay: “Hey, dinosaurs are real. It could be worse.”
Tabi (NPC): “HOW COULD IT BE WORSE!?”
Kay: “I walk away, I can’t believe she asked that question.”

The weaver gave Ruby an idea of how much an outfit for her would cost. She got an idea and went to visit the weapon smith. Kay, seeing Ruby return, joined her to the weapon smith. The massive blacksmith pointed them to the building next door without a word and an older-looking version of the blacksmith met them inside. The walls were lined with weapons, and Kay spotted an AK-47 mounted on the wall. She pointed the modern gun out to Ruby.

Ruby gave him the large falchion they had and asked him about how much it would be worth. Ben, the weapon smith, was rather taken aback by the sword and asked how they came to have it. Ruby and Kay told him the truth and he admitted that he had made this sword, about a year ago, for an explorer named Robert. He was willing to part with a pair of smaller falchions, a pair of double-barreled shotguns and a pouch of shells to get the sword back, since its owner was deceased.

He also bought the rifle and its ammo, but wouldn’t buy the tranquilizers without knowing what was in them. While Ruby contemplated testing them out on Kay, she, ultimately did not. They asked about general care and maintenance of the weapons and tools, and were given a crash course in their care.

Ben (NPC): “Best way to take care of your tools? For you? Don’t leave town.”

As they left the weapon smith, Ruby tripped and did a face plant in some dino poop (seems like that will be a running, critical failure, gag for the game). Kay did not see this, as she was distracted by a group of four people riding hadrosaurs, dropping them and a pachycephalosaurs off at the stable. The group was three men and a girl. One of the men and the girl headed into the saloon, while one of the remaining men went to get something out of the saddlebags of the pachy, and the last man went to talk to the stable hand. The two men, who had not gone to the saloon, immediately, both had AK’s slung across their back. After the men were finished, and Kay helped Ruby from her face of dino dung, everyone headed to the saloon.

Rick saw the girl and young man enter, figuring that the girl was in her mid-teens, and the young man was in his late teens to early twenties. When the two, older, adults entered the saloon and sat down with them, Rick asked the bartender who they were. The bartender told him, they were the Marshall’s. The two adults were Jack and Rick, and the two kids were Holly and Will. The kids were Rick’s kids, and Jack was his brother.

Rick (PC), with Tabi, went over at introduced himself. He had a short discussion before Kay and Ruby joined them. Rick and Jack told their story. Jack, a geologist, had gone into the mountains with his brother and family, and, while on a raft, were struck with a massive earthquake. The river turned into a rapidly-falling waterfall, into a rainbow field, like our tepid heroes had encountered, and they found themselves in a lake, under the Third Pillar. They then explained that, whoever numbered the pillars, didn’t do so linearly. The Third Pillar is the next one to the east, of the First Pillar. They didn’t get it either.

They said that, until they met the PCs, they hadn’t met anyone else who had travelled here through a portal. Everyone else had woken up. Rick’s son, Will, interrupted that a person named “Aven” also claimed to have come here through a portal. He also said that she claimed to know how to open them. Rick and Jack both bristled slightly at Aven’s mention.

Rick (NPC): “They don’t need to get mixed up with that trollop.”
Rick (PC; OOC): “Wait, tell me more.”

They explained that they purchased their Pachy, (named Pachy-Man, since their Hadrosaurs were named Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde) from Aven. However, she lived near the Sixth Pillar, which, was the one to the west of the First Pillar. They explained that she did a lot of trading with Jacktown, a technologically-advanced, if insular, settlement in the north. Also, the Sixth Pillar was on the other side of a mountain range. While there are passes they could take, the most efficient method of travel to her outpost is by air.

They also went on to say that they were heading to the north, to visit Dr. Thorogood, a botanist. They were going to spend some time here, at the Stonehead outpost, to gather supplies and send a message to see if the good doctor was home, explaining that it would take a day or so to get the message to him (through a form of carrier pigeon, though, less pigeon and more dimorphodon).

The party discussed their options and decided, if the Marshall’s would let them, they’d like to go visit the doctor to get some more information. The Marshall’s were originally skeptical, but Kay pointed out they had Pod, and Tabi said she would rather stay in town for the time being. The Marshall’s accepted and told them that they had about a week to kill.

The party went about outfitting themselves as well. Kay took a job at the stables, mostly shoveling poop, but learning basic care about Pod and other dinos. Ruby joined up with the guards and they were happy to have her help out with general peace-keeping in the town. Tabi, had gotten a job at the saloon waiting tables. The bartender assured the party that Tabi was just a waitress, and anything else she decided to do was her decision.

Rick went to meet the banker, Arnold. The meeting was a little awkward as Rick discovered it was Arnold who had purchased his watch. After a series of mutual critical failures (on both sides, but Arnold made many more than Rick, and it didn’t seem appropriate, inside the bank, for there to be piles of poop to fall into), Arnold commissioned Rick to write him a story. Rick spent the week and wrote him a western (Rick’s specialty) and was paid well for his work.

Rick also talked with several of the craftsmen in town and put a down payment on a four-wheeled, covered, cart for Pod, to be picked up the next time they were in town.

The morning to depart came. The party dressed in their new, local clothes, said goodbye to Tabi. They paid for Pod’s boarding, joined up with the Marshalls and left the Stonehead outpost by the north gate.

And we ended the session there.

In general I giggled a lot while reading the logs of the first two sessions of this campaign. It looks to be a lot of fun, if a bit on the warped side. I'd like to hear some additional general background on the campaign and your ideas. for it. But don't give away any secrets if any of your players read here.

Keep posting these, it's nice to see what others have been doing.

You and me both. But I've never had the right set of players to try it with (or alternately the right GM to run it so I could play).

This is really fun to read. I hope you keep it up!

Btw. what sort of currency do they use in this Lost world? As you describe them "getting money".

If I didn't use the Marshalls I'm pretty sure I would have lost some geek cred.

Well, there really aren't any secrets yet. This game came out of having a couple of players unable to make our game, so, instead of wasting another session, I just pulled out some old pre-gens I had, handed them out and went with Dinosaurs.

Hand of Bobb pointed out, after session three (which I need to write up and post), that he knows the game is still working from a lot of spontaneity, so there are a lot of information that should have been available, but I didn't have it at the time.

The game owes as much to Land of the Lost as it does to Ark: Survival Evolved. There is a bit of Jurassic Park and Benny Hill. There is a good chance that updated Sleestacks will appear in the game.

It's starting to settle down and become an actual game.

I actually had a conundrum with this for a while, but eventually went with coins. In the notebook I have for the game, I actually have a section on the coins: what they're made of, weight, what they look like and their "real world" and current world value. Created with Glittering Prizes.

My players aren't interested in the "details," unless it's specifically relevant to the scene. It was more fun for them to try to figure out an "exchange rate" then for them to know the details of the currency. I have it, so I can "price" things in the game, but, it's not something I've spent too much time on.

Other than figuring out what critters were on the faces of the coins. That was important.

Even better, sometimes a lot of fun can come from spur of the moment ideas, and this one looks to be fun. Can't wait for the next write up.

The game owes as much to Land of the Lost as it does to Ark: Survival Evolved. There is a bit of Jurassic Park and Benny Hill. There is a good chance that updated Sleestacks will appear in the game.

It's starting to settle down and become an actual game.
I had to look up Ark: Survival Evolved having never heard of it (I don't do any of the console gaming). I would think that both the original and new (movie) Sleestacks should be there, but that's probably just me.

I would personally be interested in the details of the coins. I kind of like that stuff. But then again, I'm weird.
