But that would involve doing layout twice -- once for B&W artwork and then once again for color artwork. ("Lay this book out in color" and "lay this book out in B&W" are two different jobs that overlap less than you think -- if you're doing it right. Really!) So that option would more than satisfy the "printing issue," sure, but it would also cost more money than releasing in B&W or releasing in color -- almost certainly affecting PDF price points.

Anyway, I can live with B&W as I understand that I'm probably a minority, and "time is money" is a real business choice.
Glad you understand. In this economy, I personally (speaking for myself, not the company!) don't think it's at all unreasonable for a business to consistently restrict their options to those that don't compromise their quality, then (from those options) choose the one that results in the cheapest price. No one's got money to waste right now, after all. :)

I will cry like a little baby if ever the choice is made to stop releasing future 4e hardcovers in colour.

This is funny. :)

Remember all the whinging about how expensive and unnecessary full-color hardcovers where?
We've always had B&W softcovers and we don't need this newfangled color stuff! Humph!

Yep. I was one of 'em. And while the color's pretty, I still don't mind B&W ... and my budget minds it even less.
