Note that there is no option to pick a dagger up off the ground in HTH.

... unless your GM rules you can use the same ready option you use for daggers on your person, for daggers in the HTH hex.

So if you had the classic Fight To The Death situation, where the two people begin unarmed but there's one knife on the ground between them (and sometimes their off-hands are tied together, just for extra fun), and they both try to grab it, how would they determine who gets it?

If it is during a combat already in progress, and they're already in HTH, I would have whoever goes first due to current adjDX get the first chance, requiring the usual 3/DX (not at +4) roll to ready a dagger in combat.

If it is during a combat already in progress, and they're NOT already in HTH, I would again just use the normal rules - the one with higher adjDX can use the pick up a dropped weapon option. Then the other figure can act.

If it is the first act that starts off combat, and they both are trying to grab it, I'd have them roll a Contest of DX to see who grabs it first.

There's also an article on the "hands tied together" dagger duel TFT in an old issue of Interplay.

theres a common trope in cinema where the faster guy goes for the dropped weapon and the other guy kicks it away before they can snatch it up .. beyond the provenance of TFT?

also, its a pretty low level martial arts trick to 'strip' a weapon from an enemy .. I can do this quickly with a knife or (toy) pistol, and Im no bruce lee type at all, believe me .. I suspect it would NOT work vs a machete or anything that long .. but its an easy trick if you know it

anyone from Cidri who called themselves a fighter would know simple tricks like this at least well enuf to try, not just guys who have specialised unarmed combat skills

Unarmed Combat doesn't apply to daggers and Brawling has no effect on HTH contests other than a slight damage add, which doesn't apply to daggers.

sure thats true .. Im saying this trick is BELOW the level of needing UC training

maybe a contest of DX vs defenders ST to try to get the dagger off them (cause Ive noted it doesnt work at all if they are MUCH stronger than you)

also, at the end of the trick you have their dagger in your "off hand'', so another turn to ready it properly

blowing it definetly means they get a free auto hit on your favoured hand
