And I call them Hero Points, but I do it as a 4cp/1 success. They can earn them by doing something that the whole group decides is cool enough to get a point, but not if it's something they spent a point to pull off.

And the best part is they forget they have them until the last minute! No one says "I'll use a Hero Point and steal the car", it's always "Oh God, we're hanging 200 feet in the air on the bottom of the flying gargoyle and we still killed it... Can I spend I H.P. to steer it away from power lines or towards the nearest roof?!". If they figure a way out of that without the points, they get one.

Also in my games, if they make the roll by 10 (not the skill roll, the modified) it's a crit, doesn't count for snipers.

How do you classify "sniper", and why doesn't it count?

Here's another one I thought of: the containers the PCs are carrying (backpacks, bags, pouches, etc) do not count towards their encumbrance. Note that this does not negate the weight of anything inside!

Well, unless it's a high cinematic game ;-).

Sorry I missed this before!

Basically I count it as someone using a rifle, a scope and aiming until they get the full bonus from a prone or hidden position.

Another way to explain it is they have to be in some danger for it to be heroic. If they are 900 yards away and no one can see them, it's just not sporting.

A rule I like to use is one I call Comedy Damage. If a character gets injured outside of the standard life-or-death adventure action, and it's funny, then I call it Comedy Damage. The player does not have to write it down. He remains injured only as long as its funny and when he needs his HP back, he's got it.

So if Bif the Barbarian makes a comment about how Mabel the Mage is putting on weight, and she clobbers him, he takes Comedy Damage. Or if Bif has a Critical Failure on his Stealth roll while sneaking down some stairs, I will describe in loving detail how he bounces and careens down the stairway and give him Comedy Damage; but once the orcs show up to investigate all the noise he made, I don't penalize his HP for the bruises he accumulated on the way down.

So Karoi clobbering Ryo with a hyperdimensional hammer is Comedy Damage.

Moe jabbing Curly in the eye with his fingers is Comedy Damage.

Jack Burton firing his gun into the air and having pieces of falling masonry hit him on the head is Comedy Damage.

But damage sustained in the actual fight is not.

Nice. I'm going have to find a way to use this. :)

YOU LEAVE JACK BURTON ALONE! We are in his debt. He showed great courage.

And a very cool idea I may well steal.

With the understanding that I haven't run a game in a couple of years, the biggest thing that I used to do with cinematic games in GURPS is:

Don't use points to make characters. Just make someone cool to play that fits the setting and very general power level. I had surprising success with players using this style of character generation.

I use something much like the "hero and victory" points as well.

I also do not give points for disadvantages, instead I give 50 extra points (so a 150 starting PC is actually 200) or an extra 100 for Supers (500 becomes 600)

Instead you get HP points when your disadvantages come into play

Badguy Reload Frustration

Whenever a badguy has to reload, they will spend 3x time, 5x time or even more hitting, scowling and swearing in frustration at the weapon before actually reloading it.
