Remove Traps errata
While looking at what the party's petite perceptive pea green pythoness can do to Aid the incompetent rangers and rogues (just let her rest for an hour after your tracking or remove traps roll), I stumbled over this.
Which of these two paragraphs is correct? ITL 39: "Without this talent, you roll twice as many dice, and any failure by more than 5 results in the trap going off." ITL 73: "If an attempt to remove a trap fails, the trap is triggered."

Re: Remove Traps errata
I read it that for the thief with the remove traps talent, a failure always sets off the trap. And for the guy that is not a thief (lacks the talent), he must roll double the dice but then gets a 5 point margin to setting it off. The unskilled fellow is still worse off because the doubled dice more than makes up for the 5 point margin.

Re: Remove Traps errata
This is the kind of thing I always played by ear. One trap may be easier for an unskilled person to remove, one trap may be much harder for an unskilled person, but they were about the same if you knew what you were doing.
I didn't always tell the players the number of dice to roll until they committed to the attempt. They'd get an idea of how easy or hard it was, but since two of my friends were professional bridge players, I didn't want the game to turn into a math contest. :) |

Re: Remove Traps errata
Depending on the trap, the GM may also decide that it doesn't matter how many dice get rolled because the 'unskilled' attempt will never be successful.

Re: Remove Traps errata
Perhaps the difference is in "disabling" a trap and "removing" a trap.

Re: Remove Traps errata
I agree Tomc that you don't tell unskilled players how hard it will be.
I do think that someone with the right skills should be able to estimate the difficulty. |
