Mark V in HO scale?
A quick note, I'll try to expand this in a few days if it seems necessary.
To make a long story short, I was trying to explain just how large an Ogre is to a non-gamer, but he is familiar with HO scale trains. Looking thru lots of material, I did find an unofficial source that gives me a length of 83.67 feet for the Mark V. It also had a visual representation (side view) so I could estimate the height at about 56.4 feet. A "fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants" estimate for width gives me roughly half of the length. Since in HO scale 1 foot is represented by 3.5 mm (and there are 25.4 mm to the inch), I ended up with: Length: about 11.5 inches Width: about 5.75 inches Height: 7.75 inches Wouldn't that look cool on his model train setup? Thoughts?

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
Your math matches mine ... it would certainly take up a fair amount of layout space were it built.
If your friend still has trouble thinking of that size, tell him it's the same length as two coupled 40' AAR boxcars. |

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
Are there any pictures comparing the sizes of e.g. HVYs to Abrams?

I've got the two drawings that compare the various Ogres to an Abrams. I downloaded them years ago and cannot remember the website or credit the creator. Does anyone else remember these?

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
They are likely from Winchell Chung's website, that's where I snagged them.
They show a V, III, II, I and an Abrams, along with a human figure. |

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
Let's math it out. I got out a plastic Mk. V and a HVY to measure with my calipers:
Mk. V = 3.275" long; 1.81" wide (over rear treads); 2.225" tall. HVY = 1.129" long; .61" wide; .444" tall. So a real world HVY would be 28'-3" long; 15'-3" wide; and 11'-1" tall. So someplace in-between the sizes of an actual German 'Tiger II' and the prototype 'Maus'. Winchell Chung's artwork states a Mk. V is 25.5 meters long, and a real Abrams is 7.93 meters long (from Wikipedia). If we use Chung's 25.5 meter length, the SJG plastic Mk. V mini is to a scale of 1:306.58 -- if we instead say it is truly 1:300, than a 'real' Mk. V should be "only" 24.95 meters long. Going with 1:300 scale still (since that is the accepted and stated goal of the minis), the Abrams would be 1.036" long; .48" wide; and .32" tall. So roughly 90% as long as a HVY, but about 80% as wide and tall. |

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
Winchell's Size comparison chart is part of a larger album where he used a bunch of 3D model work he did a couple years ago to determine sizing.

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
I'm pretty sure the minis are 1:285 scale.

Re: Mark V in HO scale?
If that's the actual scale, then a Mk. V is 23.7 meters long ...
