Incidentally as far as Essential Wood goes, in my Yrth, I would make that spell only known to elves and Sahudi. The Sahudi would know it because they have "wood/plant" as an element but the human and goblin styles of the south don't conceive of it that way and thus never discovered that spell.

Nope. It's quite definite that Essential Wood is not an Area Spell.

It also doesn't follow that one Regular Spell that allows selectivity does not backflow up the chain and establish a general principle. Rules flow downhill from the general rules of the Spell class to possible specific exceptions mentioned in the text of individual Spells.

But beyond that, _why_ would anyone want to do this? The energy savings are quite small by any measure and it's especially no bargain when you compare the lost benefits of an all Essential construction.

Use some version of a Link spell; the trigger is the phrase "Surf's up, dudes!"

Not wholly looney. IIRC from Garrett Mattingly's book Don Alonso Martinez de Leyva ran a damaged galleon through a narrow passage about three times as wide as the ship during a hurricane.

At night.

You missed my point: Specifically, the ability to target or not target something via spell, is not a property only of Area spells, but also a property of Information spells, in one case, a Special spell, and in another, a regular spell (which Essential Wood is). My point is, GURPS doesn't seem to imply that targetability is for one type of spell classification only. Point is, it is not an open and shut case. Too often, someone will ask "What about this reading of the rules as written, does it mean that...." and have to have Kromm respond because it isn't written nor not-written. That being the case, many would argue that because it isn't written, it can't be. Others might argue that because the precedent has been set elsewhere, it isn't forbidden, and thus, allowed.

To put it mildly, rules-lawyerism at its best. ;)
