I second Varyon's point about HEAT warheads. An extra foot between the explosion and e main armor might completely remove the armor divisor.

Also, if the shield facing can be made bard enough, it could cause kinetic rounds to shatter before hitting the actual armor.

I picture shields being usefull in a situation where the individual weapons of the enemy are not a threat, but their support weapons are. Armored troops would close with the enemy under cover of shields, then drop them
