Who says armor cannot withstand nukes?
In various threads I have seen the claim that armor that can withstand a tactical nuke is unrealistic. I would like to call your attention to the following:
"In the 15.2 Kiloton REDWING-INCA nuclear test on June 26, 1956, 30 cm diameter carbon-coated steel balls were placed 9 meters from the bomb by researcher Lew Allen, and were undamaged with only a loss of 0.1 mm of surface graphite." Source: Declassified data on effects of nuclear weapons and effective countermeasures against them, http://glasstone.blogspot.com/2006/0...ear-tests.html Now consider the following: Vaporization temperature of Carbon: 3915°K, 3642°C, 6588°F Vaporization temperature of Tungsten: 5828°K, 5555°C, 10031°F Vaporization temperature of Tungsten Carbide: 6273°K, 6000°C, 10832°F Source: Wikipedia So who says armor cannot withstand nukes? |

Re: Who says armor cannot withstand nukes?
How far from the blast site where those balls found?
Bouncing Ogres hopping around the battlefield from all the nukes going off sounds...interesting.

It's not the armor plating that you are generally worried about.

Your question makes me think of a new activity: Nuclear Bowling. :)

I did not know that story!
But the conclusion that the crew is the most vulnerable part of the tank on an atomic battlefield is exactly in line with Ogre canon. |

Re: Who says armor cannot withstand nukes?
The video of the nukes hitting WWII-era tanks show them being flipped over or pushed back a couple of dozen feet, but no bouncing across the battlefield. Now if you set off a nuke UNDER an Ogre...
