Re: [Low Tech] Head and Hand Armor Tradeoffs
400 per (1+SM) can make anything transparent
Or 50 per lb makes it invisible I cant find an 'Aural Invisibility' spell for the hearing problem |

+9 CF for malleable glass / transparent aluminum. Not sure how it does DR wise or anything . . . . . just use normal armor stats and throw +9 CF on it and call it good?

Re: [Low Tech] Head and Hand Armor Tradeoffs
Do people think a Technique could be used to buy off gauntlet penalty for fast draw?

You find Fast Draw to be weak? Ill admit this surprises me . . . . I think fast draw is one of the most common skills ever my characters have had (varying on what they are armed with)

I'd consider a technique for Fast Draw a lot less closely than a technique for Guns. |

If the character is someone who is routinely in situations where combat suddenly erupts out of a situation where it's socially unacceptable to have a weapon already drawn (e.g. tavern brawls), then gloves or gauntlets are certainly not something I'd really look to. On the other hand, if the character is someone who often finds him- or herself in combat situations with enemies capable of doing a healthy amount of cutting damage, you can sure bet I'm going to put some gauntlets on—I've seen too many perfectly decent characters lose perfectly decent limbs and extremities because of the high GURPS ST-based damage relative to dismemberment threshold. The head is another matter. Notable exceptions aside, I rarely see PCs make a habit of going for the face because it has no special wounding multiplier and has no chance to cripple an enemy (despite that nice "automatic KD&S roll" feature). Again, however, it varies by character role. If the character often operates on his own or has any scouting obligation at all, I would want to avoid the Hard of Hearing penalties associated with certain helmet options—but if the character has allies that can handle the scouting / perception and point him in the direction that killing needs to happen, being able to have perfect hearing himself isn't as important. Vision is important no matter what your role is, though. I'm running some trial combats in preparation for a new solo campaign, and my player's PC has No Peripheral Vision by way of a full helm. This guy is an absolute combat beast, but if a goblin manages to slip outside his field of vision, he can be brought to his knees in short order—that Parry 17 / Block 16 isn't any good against attacks you can't even see. A possible solution that I personally like is throwing in some of the Face Protection options. Get a padded mail coif (assuming the role is appropriate for suffering Hard of Hearing), and throw a bascinet on top of it (1/6 Face Protection). Add a Nasal (1/6), a brim (1/6), and cheek guards (2/6)*, and now you have 5/6 Face Protection and unobstructed vision. If you really want to go the distance, add a Bevor (+1/6 face protection). Not too shabby, by my reckoning. * Alternatively, get a Pot Helm instead of a Bascinet and add the ear protection here for 3/6. I like the Bascinet for the protection to Hit Location 5 (Rear), though. |
