Default Scenario: Conan Helps Out, Wandering Monster, Potion of Cowardice

Hi, :)

We were playing the other day and got into specific scenario, we ruled in favor of player "Larry", but player "Chris" objected to it.

Here's what happened:

Chris on level 9, played a monster and then immediately played [Conan Helps Out], understanding he already gets a level and wins the game. Larry countered with a follow up [Wandering Monster] right after the first monster is killed, making Chris fight another monster, then Larry played a "Potion of Cowardice" to make Chris run away, the idea is being he won't be able to collect rewards, therefore Chris won't level up.

We were in the idea that [Conan Helps Out] gives you the rewards after combat, but it's not clearly indicated in the card and seems you get it once you played it, which makes it open to a scenario that you will get a level before combat ends.

Did we make the right call?

Thanks.

There are other cards which remove all the Monsters (like this one), and in the past, I've ruled that that kind of effect on other cards stays in place for the entire combat. What that means is that any monsters added by a Wandering Monster would also fall under the effect of Conan Helps Out, and would be discarded. In other words, this card effectively ends combat because adding Monsters is meaningless. I say effectively, because there are cards that cancel a played card which could be used to cancel Conan Helps Out. However, for this instance, Chris won the game.

Thanks.

So the idea of "Conan, the Barbarian" entering the fray and aids the Munckins in Combat is correct, so any more monsters appearing would just be destroyed.

Just a follow up.

Another player (lets call him "Jason") had Transferal Potion, if he had played that card, and directed the monsters to him, would he be fighting the monster(s) with the aid of Conan Helps Out or would it cancel the effect of the Conan card?

P.S.
the #1 objective of Larry and Jason is to not have Chris win the game at that turn.

The Transferal Potion is a bit trickier question.
Without answering your question about the Conan Helps Out transferring to the new combat owner, I will answer that it would not prevent the original combat owner from winning.

The FAQ says:

A. You do; you killed it. (This has been ruled different ways at different times, but we got a ruling directly from Steve, so it trumps everything else.) You get your level and Treasures after the whole combat is resolved. If the other player also wins, you draw Treasures first.

Chris would still get the level, since Transferal Potion doesn't cancel the level he would have earned at that point, and Jason would have wasted a card because he can't fight any new Monsters because Conan's helping out, taking their Treasure (and all the remaining levels, I suppose). So, if Chris *wasn't* going to win the game in this instance, it's a huge waste of time to try to do anything other than playing a card which specifically says it cancels a card as it was being played to cancel out Conan Helps Out.

Let me be very clear: In order to cancel a card, you have to play a card which specifically says that it cancels that type of card (e.g., Wishing Ring vs. a Curse), or any card (e.g., Annihilation from Munchkin 2).
