Yep, Wh40K, Mechwarrior Dark Ages, and even to a significant extent Battletech, and X-Wing, the factions speak to people on a very deep level. People don't /just/ want to play a game, they want to join a tribe.
[LOL. Would chess be more popular if Black and White each had a few hundred thousand words of backstory and lore and faction-specific game mechanics? :D ] |

Yes, while emotional attachment to the background is certainly a factor, there are other things at play.
GW makes a big effort to stay in the news every week. That sort of marketing and PR effort has a price tag. SJG has decided to focus efforts on other parts of the business. (No judgement there, just different) |
