Default Police Cruiser Challenge

Ok, so we had a Shiruken Challenge and decided that the base platform was pretty useless. Let's try with something that should be easy to find, the Police Cruiser.

To avoid any copyright issues and preventing too much flexibility let us assume that you are a hobby duellist and have acquired a second hand Cruiser. You don't have the skill, equipment or to conduct anything beyond a medium difficulty. You are using a cruiser as a base, you are not required to build a cruiser. You can target your vehicle at any market - commuter, divisional duellist, escort, pimp-mobile, you name it.

You may Install: any weapon (other than laser, rocket or missile), link.
You may remove any component.
You can freely change: Armor (incl. hubs, guards and CA), Ammunition, Tires, Magazines.

By the rules, any other component must either remain in it's original location and configuration or be removed (since there is no difficulty for repairing/installing items other than those specifically listed under the mechanics skill).

The total cost of the vehicle will be the normal sum of components cost (to avoid any complicated calculations regarding salvage value and extra retrofitting costs).

So:

you MUST have Luxury Body, x-hvy. chassis, hvy. suspension, Sport
power plant.

You MAY leave on front spoiler, overdrive, superconductors, HD brakes, ABS and the 2 spc. turret.

You MAY install any weapons (except lasers, rockets and missiles), tires, armour and links.

A few years ago a pair of detainees successfully sued the Manatee County Police for false arrest. Arrested for violating local childcare ordinances they were subsequently released without charge when the police realised they had attended at the wrong address and that the couple in question were not even residents of Manatee County.

The couple in question also received record damages due to injuries received as a direct result of the cramped conditions of the police cruiser they had been detained in after their arrest. Later investigations led to the The Manatee County Police suing their vehicle suppliers for failing to adhere to minimum standards specified in their tender.

As a result under court order several thousand vehicles were recalled by the manufacturer and were dumped on the second hand market either by the manufacturer or via Police auctions. This allowed hobbyists to acquire a high spec luxury vehicle with a great deal of high end equipment for a bargain price. We review some of those Hobbyist creations that have been seen cruising your neighbourhoods.

Well, to begin with: The CWC Police Cruiser is an illegal design -- not enough spaces. I think the CA around the driver and gunner is supposed to be one unit, not two; but the description says "each of driver, [and] gunner".

That out of the way: Most ex-bronze cars I see become taxis, or cargo haulers; so that's the direction I'm going with this.

Lux.; XH chas.; Hv. Susp.; Sport PP w/SC [3,300 PF]; 4x Solid tires w/ SB; Driver, Gunner. 2-sp. Tu.; RR (HEAT am.) [Tu.]; FCE [B]. 3x 10-pt CA (Dr.; Gn.; PP); H-D Brakes; O-drive; Cargo: 2 spaces|200 lbs. FP Armor: F: 35; L, R, B: 30; T: 40; U: 19; 2x 10-pt. FPWH [F]; 2x 10-pt. FPWG [B]. Acc.: 10; TS: 120; HC: 3. $28,885; 6,600 lbs.

Expensive, but swift, and far better armored than the cop car.

Now, the Police Cruiser I'm more familiar with, the one from _Crash City_, looks more like this:

Lux.; XH chas.; Hv. susp.; Super PP [2,600 PF]; 4x Solid tire; Driver. 2-sp. Tu.; RR [Tu.]; SD [B]; SS [B]; Link [SD-SS], 3x 10-pt CA (Dr., PP, Cargo space). Cargo: 4 sp.|400 lbs. Plastic Armor: F: 40; L, R, B, T: 30; U: 15; 2x 10-pt. WH [F]; 2x 10-pt. WG [B]. Acc.: 5; TS: 100; HC: 3. $16,350; 6,600 lbs.

Which is as good a reason as any as to why you might find a scrapper ;). If memory serves the Police Cruiser in another supplement needed to dump its ammunition if you wanted to fit the number of passengers indicated and stay under the weight allowance.

It seems police vehicles are often illegal - ironically ;)

Picasso by Swordtart:
Luxury; Extra Heavy chassis w/6 Tires (Dualies); Heavy suspension;
Sport PP w/SCs, Overdrive with 10 pt. FP CA;
6 Solid Radial tires with HDHTM.
Link, HDHTM and Overdrive.
Driver; Gunner with 10 pt. FP CA (4 spc).
2s Turret T. with Recoilless Rifle with 2 extra Magazines and magazine switch 20 rounds HEAT 10 rounds std,
Paint Spray (B) with extra mag and 50 std rounds with 10 pt. FP CA,
Hi-Res Single Weapon Computer (RR and Gunner);
HD Shocks, HD Brakes, ABS;
Spoiler.
160 pts. FP (F: 32 R: 32 L: 32 B: 32 T: 22 U: 10);
2x10 pt. FP Hubs F; 2x10 pt. FP Guards B;
Cargo 30lb no spc.
Cost: $42,250, Wgt: 6,600,
HC: 4 (5), Top Speed: 120 (140), Accel: 10 (20,5).

The Picasso is an agile long range road cruiser, suited to the light courier role. Its exceptional handling, deep magazines and respectable armour and top speeds endeared it to the more cautious courier who preferred to RUN than GUN.

That said, the reliable recoilless rifle coupled with a dedicated gunner and a high spec targeting computer means that it can generally hit what it is aiming at even at road speeds. The switchable magazine with both armour defeating and burst effect munitions means it is ideal for light but extended engagements with small bike gangs and their ilk. It is not really suited to slugging it out with larger vehicles and relies on a clean pair of heels and 250 yards of continuous paint to escape to fight another day.

It has limited cargo capacity means that it is generally used as a "glovebox" mail carrier. If the gunner is left at home, large cargos can be carried, but this removes one of its significant advantages. Between runs that 30lb can be used for dischargers and personal equipment.

A bit expensive perhaps, but with all with HS enhancing doodads and a maxed out driver it should be quite slippery. The ability to accelerate at 20 and drive at 140 without worrying about most hazards is a real bonus. A Gunner 2 will also bring even those low profile bikers into the reticule, lobbing burst effect until you get the range and then pin-point HEAT to maul them.

Well, as noted: If one changes the CA from "one each for driver and gunner" to "one for both driver and gunner", the space problem is solved (and it's a bit cheaper, to boot :) ).

That was the _CC_ Cruiser -- "Note: If two prisoners are taken in the cruiser, half the spikedropper ammo is dumped so the cruiser stays under weight." [_DCW_ 61]

Part of why, back-when, I came up with my own set of "police vehicles" -- I kept finding myself saying "if this is what the cops have to use, no wonder society is falling apart".

For ex.: A "pursuit" police car might be a _Mini-Sherman_, or my _Joseph Special T_ with the Super plant; while one of the Wagons, or the "cargo" model _Piranha_, or the "taxi" I posted above, would serve as a "paddy wagon" (prisoner transport) for after the main festivities. :)

Congreve by Swordtart:
Luxury; Extra Heavy chassis w/6 Tires (Dualies);
Heavy suspension;
Sport PP w/SCs, HDHTMs, Overdrive (10 pt CA)
6 PR tires.
Driver; Gunner (10 pt CA each)
2s Turret T. Rocket Launcher 4 extra mag (30 Armor Piercing, 10 Standard, 10 Smoke) .
Hi-Res Single Weapon Computer (Gunner, RL)
Magazine Switch;
Spoiler.
Link (Overdrive, HDHTM)
200 pts. Plastic (F: 40 R: 40 L: 40 B: 40 T: 30 U: 15);
2x10 pt. Plastic Hubs F;
2x10 pt. Plastic Guards B;
Cargo 20lb
Cost: $28,425, Wgt: 6,600,
HC: 3 (4), Top Speed: 120 (80, 140), Accel: 10 (20, 5).

One of the cheaper modifications of the police cruiser, Congreve relies on the cheap, light yet inaccurate rocket launcher. With a dedicated gunner and high resolution computer this is less of an issue. A diverse loadout allows mission flexibility, but defence is at the expense of offense. 20lb of spare capacity allows some rounding out using dischargers or personal weaponry (but not much).

The armour is increased and each crew member now gets their own set of component armour, doubling their protection.

Significantly cheaper than the Picasso this has almost as much fire power and is better armoured. There is no defensive weaponry however so it will need the armour.

Yes, that's easier than dumping half of each prisoner. ;)

It's an interesting point, is the 6 wheel part something you add to the chassis or is it part of the chassis (and thus not capable of being modified post design).

The extra $100 for 6 wheel chassis seems to be a fixed cost rather than a percentage of the body cost. This implies that it is electrical rather than structural (it is the cost of 2 links). As the wheels each have their own motor which is attached to the chassis, and those motors can be retrospectively upgraded to HTMs I would also be inclined to say that you could remove them without breaking the no chassis modification requirement.

I had assumed you couldn't in my designs, but I didn't specify it in the rules and based on the above I don't think it is a necessary restriction.

It depends on your local force. Some only get MOST of the prisoner back to the station ;)
