Re: Counterfeit Games
It is definitely a problem. Be wary of third-party stores selling popular games at low prices. Always do your research.

Re: Counterfeit Games
Every few weeks there are a rash of Chinese sellers on eBay offering a specific SJG $20 MSRP item for about $6, postage included. Yeah, those aren't suspect.

Re: Counterfeit Games
My favorite so far is the knockoff Codenames that misspells BELT as BEKT right on the box. But because the photos they use on Amazon are scraped from the actual game's site, you don't know that until you've ordered your "great deal."

Re: Counterfeit Games
As far as I know, I haven't tripped over one of these yet. Do these things have a cheap version of the game in them, or are they totally different?

Re: Counterfeit Games
By and large, it's a cheap version of the actual game. Art may be muddy or even pixellated, text is probably OCR from a legit copy (or just scanned to PDF without OCR), and the overall component quality is poor.

Re: Counterfeit Games
Thank you for the answer Andrew.
Hrm... So the unobservant gets a crappy game, and complains about the original publishers product quality. The greedy get what they pay for. And the IP owner gets nothing. Lovely.

Re: Counterfeit Games
Its an interesting phenomenon of our times.
I hope to eventually read an analysis of how widespread it is. Probably some sort of survey that followed up on customers who bought copies online would give an indication of how widespread it is. |

Re: Counterfeit Games
Counterfeit miniatures are also a real problem. There's one guy on eBay who has scammed half the BattleTech community, it seems. He didn't get me, but he did fool my ex-girlfriend.

I don't believe reporting "one guy" as a personal anecdote is at all the same sort of scale that is being claimed though. |
