Anything biological that exists in different strains or breeds is probably a decent candidate - there are sure to be breeds that are better in some way or other (or just attractively different) out there, and what with biological things being self reproducing you don't need to transport a lot of them.

Side thought: you need to be careful if you are trading self reproducing stuff into Echoes. It could be really hard to figure out the cause of an echo shift that happened a couple years after somebody delivered a small cargo of grain, which happened to be contaminated with seeds of a variety that didn't exist yet there and somebody who planted some of it noticed the odd variant.

Stuff like real saffron that requires massive hand labor could be profitable. Buy it relatively cheap on a echo where labor is still cheap and sell on homeline or later echos. Handmade cloth and other such of the higher end also.

Given how valuable Black Pepper was before the 1500's, could you simply roll in with a supply of Pepper, Ginger, Cinnamon, ect. And make hyperprofitable swaps on many echos?

Mostly yes, I think, unless a merchant who is in a good enough social position accuses you of theft... but then, troubles are where adventures come from, no?

Quote "Actually, I don't think art is going to be all that profitable.

The great works of a couple hundred divergent timelines arriving in the space of a decade or two have completely fragmented the Homeline market, and collapsed the Homeline film and publishing industries at the same time. For actual physical art, you don't actually saturate the market, but as it's now pretty much impossible to prove something is genuine, and even if you can somebody could discover a new line with another copy (and an older/better preserved/whatever one at that) tomorrow, rendering yours an "inferior copy". This means the investment side of the market that's so driven up prices in the last few decades is pretty much gone. Collectors and art lovers are still out there, so there's still *some* market, but nobody pays millions of dollars for a painting anymore."

See that is where you are wrong. Better quality yes, but the "Originals" stand the test of time and even so, a quantum signature scanner (available on Roddenberry-2 in 2370) would, in tandem with Infinity Scanners Inc, be able to pinpoint exactly where the items came from. Also any items kept from shifted or destroyed timelines would be unique.

Diamonds are common as dirt now, but gem quality cost an arm and a leg. DeBeers.
Why not monopolies that maintain scarcity on Homeline?

If you're on Homeline or anywhere else in the Infinite Worlds that's a definite "You can't get there from here.". There are no accessible worlds with a date in advance of Homeline's.

With some modifying that idea could work. Imagine that Q signature devices work only on an alternate world. But they were invented by Homeline researchers.
That creates the adventure possibilities of needing to move valuables and "fakes" to test their location of origin...

Stealing them before authentication may be slightly easier, but who knows if you risked your lives for a fake or not?
Heck, you could be hired by skeptical owners just for the insurance money.
Then when they find out that it's real, they want it back, as they only insured it for its possible authenticity.

How does that help. If I can Q-test stuff and decide its valueless because it comes from an alternate world, then it's valueless. The whole pont here is to find stuff that *isn't* valueless *despite* the fact it comes from an alternate world.
