Some combinations are especially efficient. Ogre Barbarian and Celestial Paladin come to mind - but Wood Elf Scout is too. Not surprisingly, these seem to play into racial steriotypes ;)

(( just a possible justification for D&D level ogre magi. ))

Isn't it simpler to just have the Oni be demons, and the western style Ogres be brutish giants? There's no reason to suppose that the two actually have anything in common.

Unless you don't want blue magic giants to be actual demons. There might not be a reason for them to have anything in common, but some people might like the traditional aspect of them. Demons have a lot of baggage that regular old D&D ogre mages don't, too. Hell. Banishing. That sort of thing.

Isn't a demonic origin more traditional? The "Ogre Mages" of AD&D are based on Japanese Demons more than anything else.

Traditional to the DF genre, not to mythology in general.

The only damn thing in the whole game that can teleport and it is the named Oni that is an actual eating machine. GREAT. ;)

But this is all very off topic...
