Clerics of an Old Testiment style god
I was wondering if anyone has played a cleric of an Old Testimentvstyle god and if there is any advice you can give. One thing I was thinking of would be critical failures on spells and exorcisms and such. Spells are sort of like prayers petitioning Divine power so what if the Divine gets angered by the petition? Maybe the cleric is struck with boils or a curse or even a bolt of lightning. Maybe even turned into a pillar of salt. The critical failure might make the Divine angry and the cast down vengeance upon the impious cleric. This is just one idea so any others would be appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe after a critical failure the cleric is surrounded by swarms of locusts or frogs or flies. Maybe all the water the cleric touches turns to blood or hail constantly falls around the cleric or he is surrounded by darkness until he can atone for his sins.

Re: Clerics of an Old Testiment style god
Attaching Biblical punishments to critical failures instead of direct responses to specific transgressions is going to make the deity seem random, capricious, petulant, or insane and possibly all of the above. The thing that you are describing sounds more like a mad demiurge that has taken over in the absence (death?) of an actual god.
If you want to continue your quest for historical fantasy gaming and wedge in the Abrahamic faiths, you might want to draw inspiration from the Green Ronin supplement "Testament," Ars Magica's "Realm of the Divine", or the recent "Lion & Dragon" from DOM Publishing. |

There is at least a Pyramid article adapting from that into the DF line, the title is Dungeon Saints. On the other hand, the acts of the biblical God aren't random, even if it's no wonder that the reasons there can be hard to ascertain without certain training at least, not just Theology but Hebrew Kabbalah as well. However if you follow the random way, you'll achieve a caricature if that is what you seek. Quote:
By the way, it also could fit with b-dog's false god idea.
