Sense of Impending Doom and Curse! Change Sex

We've had disputes on these 2 cards.

Sense of Impending Doom - Play this card on a rival at any time...Your Rival will get -10 on his next combat...whatever it is...

Curse! Change Sex - -5 to your next combat due to distraction...

Our question is if the rival went up against a monster but Ran Away are these 2 cards discarded now? Thats how we've been playing it because there is another similar card that specifies you must slay a monster and these don't. We figure technically you went into combat but ran away.

If you get a card that affects your next combat, then any combat is enough to satisfy the condition. You just need to start the combat, it doesn't matter how that combat ends.

And just for completeness, if you get hit by such a card while you are in combat, it affects you immediately and does not linger beyond that combat.

Well, I might add a clarifying question, if I may...


The card says YOUR next combat.

So, if I am a helper in someone else's combat, then do these curses apply there and are they discarded there? It wasn't my combat — I just joined it.

What happens when you kick down the door and draw Sense of impending doom? Do you out it in your hand or does it happen to you like a curse would?
