Frankly, GURPS treats explosions realistically and area-effect attacks unrealistically. This leads to area attacks being more effective than explosive ones. RPM does nothing to change that (it's not the magic system's place to alter the game system rules!), so you're right -- area-effect attacks are better than explosive ones.

One way around that might be to house-rule that "explosive" really means Explosive 3, so you're dividing damage by yards rather than (yards x 3). Perhaps give that a try and see if it helps rectify things?

I always do that myself, but not because I think anything needs rectified, I just don't like any level of explosive except three.

Thanks PK,
We discussed it and have decided to not allow regular external (x3) damage with AoE. Any "AoE" like effect (for Damage) will have to use explosive (x2). I think that will fix things nicely.

Thanks again,
Merrick

You could just house-rule that AoE is x1 Damage same as internal damage so the 8 energy for Damage in spell example 1 is 3D instead of 9 making spell example 2 over 3 times as potent at ground zero .

This would allow for clouds of toxic and/or corrosive vapour , rains of fire or cutlery and such without making explosive such a poor cousin .

Lingering Flame
Spell Effects: Greater Create Energy + lesser sense body
Inherent Modifiers: Damage, External Burning explosion, range, area of effect
Greater Effects: 1 (x3)

Creates a sphere of flame that floats in the targeted place till someone comes close to it, then it explodes.

Typical casting: Greater Create Energy (6) + lesser sense body (2) + lesser control magic (5) + Area of Effect, 3 yards (2) + Damage, External Burning exploding 3d (2) + Range, 5 yards (2). 57 energy (19×3)

Would this be OK?

Undead Trap
Spell Effects:Lesser Control Undead + Lesser Sense Undead.
Inherent Modifiers:Area of Effect, bestow a penalty
Greater Effects:0 (x1).

This is a ward (pp. 24-25) against undead, ususally cast as a conditional spell. It only activates if an undead enters the warded area. Once triggered, the ward will hold the undead in the area for the duration (or until broken through).

Typical Casting:Lesser Control Magic (5) + Lesser Control Undead (5) + Lesser Sense Undead (2) + Area of Effect, 3 yards (2) + bestow a penalty -4 To resist ward (8) + Duration, 10 minutes (1). 23 energy (23×1)

Looks good to me.

Doesn't including penalties to resist negate the need for high skill wards?

I would have thought a more spirit of the rules might be concentric wards to slow down any breakthroughs. With maybe some conditional damaging spells.

I figured that would work for summonings. To make demons negotiate rather than just body slam the single ward until it drops.

Actually, that is a issue. It should be Bestows a Bonus and all that does is increase the strength of the ward itself. The cost is the same, but the term is different.

Okay, cool. I love the system, but am having trouble internalizing it all.
