Default Lockheed Skunkworks to build Ogre fusion reactor prototype by 2017

Lockheed Skunkworks expects to have a 100 megawatt compact fusion reactor prototype ready by 2017 and production models ready by 2023.

The reactors would use a breakthrough cylindrical magnetic containment system and would be small enough to ride in the back of an 18 wheeler...or fit inside an Ogre Mark III.

Hmm. When did we start to have non-compact fusion reactors?

I really hope they can do it, not for the sake of having Ogres but for the sake of energy abundance and all the things that would bring.

Several prototypes have been built but none work well or cheaply or give back much more energy than what is pumped in.

That was my understanding. Nothing at a remotely useful scale existed outside labs, and none of the labs had reached net energy production. (I can't recall whether even the tiny experiments have reached net energy production.)

The claim that Lockheed will build a "compact" reactor (with more power than anything experimental that I know of) in 4 years and have it commercialized in 10 years (after six decades of failures and a decade before ITER lights up) seems laughable. If they were proposing to have a prototype by 2107 rather than 2017, it might be plausible...

If memory serves, the best Tokamak (JET) has managed to operate at a loss of "only" 30% of the input energy. Not quite the performance one would normally require before pursuing a compact version.

Watch the video on the linked page. The new design is ten times stronger than what is possible with a Tokamak. Comparing this to a Tokamak is a little like comparing Edison's DC to Tesla's AC.

Seems mainly like boasting.
But hell if they are going to actually pull this off - then it would be really good idea to buy some shares now :D

And I'm sure their unicorn breeding program will take off any time now too.
