Re: Points versus Combat Value
Factors to consider:
PDPR - probable damage per round CTH - chance to hit as against CD - combat durability where CD = DR + HP*2/3 Infliction Factor = PDPR x CTH. Relative Combat Effectiveness can be found by the ratio: Enemy CD/Your IF : Your CD/Enemy IF. |

Re: Points versus Combat Value
Another problem is player expireance.
Last night I was GM-ing a MH game. One player is a warrior & was attacking a heavily armored giant scorpion. For three or four rounds he did 3 attacks per turn trying to overwhelm the scorp's defences. He only got 1 hit through & it did not penitrate the armor. Another player suggested that instead of volume of attacks, he do a faint & targeted attack at chinks in armor. In desperation, the warrior did that. He hit & knocked the scorp down to below 0 HP. In short: same character, same stats yet very different combat efectiveness. Therefore, I dont think you can give opponents a generic challenge value. I think the only solution is to run a few combats & get a 'feel' for the combat ability of the party. A sugestion is to have different opponents in the same encounter to oppose the different types of PC. A heavily armed & armored guy for the fighters & and a lighter guy for the non-combat PC's. |

Re: Points versus Combat Value
And don't underestimate the ability of an effective non-combatant to toss a Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. Some grenades - especially adhesive/sticky/glue types that do Binding rather than straight damage - can really mess up your planned encounter.

Re: Points versus Combat Value
The range of tactical options in the GURPS combat system means that getting tactics right is important, but it is not always obvious what the right tactics are. In The Other Game, there's much less of this, so the effectiveness of a combatant is much more predictable.

Re: Points versus Combat Value
Even with a calculator, there would be many mistakes, two warriors, one knight with a halberd that does of 3d, skill 16, parry 11, and with a plate armor of DR6, with move 4, vs a peasant with a crossbow with 2d, skill12, and no armor, but move 6, even though the knight have around 150 points and the peasant only 25, the peasant could kill the knight with time and space.
