Wall card

My question is about the instant wall card. My wife and i were playing with a friend and on my turn i drew a lvl 1 monster. I was lvl 9 and would have won the game, but they played the instant wall card. The dispute was over whether this forces me out of fighting the monster or gives the option to escape without rolling the dice. I settled on the former and was forced out, and my wife won on the next turn. I am not sure if that card was utilized properly though. the help is much appreciated.
