Default Re: Armor Quality

i agree completly. crudly made poor steel, vs super refined fluted and tempered steel - no comparison. i have been useing the following for quality and weight. it was reverse engineered, so for example using scale to light scale will yeild the same results wether you use the basic set characters or my method.

Armour:

Armour quality Weight Cost Note
Quality – Crude x 1.5 x 0.6 often a ‘-1TL’ copy
Quality – Normal x 1.0 x1. 0 off the shelf!
Quality – Fine x 0.8 x 2.0 often ‘+TL’ copy
Quality – Very Fine x 0.6 x 5.0 metal armour only.

Armour material stock DR Weight and cost multipliers
Gauge – Ultra light -3 New DR/ old DR as multiplier, or 0.50
Gauge - Extra light -2 New DR/ old DR as multiplier, or 0.66 [TL+]
Gauge -Light -1 New DR/ old DR as multiplier, or 0.75
Gauge -Normal +0 Off the Shelf!
Gauge -Heavy +1 New DR/ old DR as multiplier, or 1.3
Gauge -Extra heavy +2 New DR/ old DR as multiplier, or 1.6 [TL+]
Gauge - Ultra heavy +3 New DR/ old DR as multiplier, or 2.0

Note: New DR/ old DR as multiplier or X, whichever is greater [this will be true for
suits heavier than DR3].
‘TL+’ means a TL3 suit of chain mail would become TL3+
‘Bold Type’ is purchasable
‘Italicised Type ‘ is obtainable with special materials.

So a mail shirt DR 4/2 in extra light gauge would be DR 2/2, cost [0.66] $99, weight [0.66] 9.9 lb. A heavy gauge Mitheral shirt DR 7/2would cost [10 GP/lb] $11,300, and weigh [0.75] 11.3lb
When calculating weight and cost, multiply the base armour weight and cost by its gauge, then multiply those by the quality.

A worked example: normal steel corslet

Armour DR Weight Cost
Extra light plate 4 23.3 858
Light plate 5 28.0 1040
Normal plate 6 35.0 1300
Heavy plate 7 45.5 1690
Extra heavy plate 8 56.0 2080

Random examples:

Armour DR Weight Cost

X-Heavy Lorica Segmentata. 7 41.6 $1088
Heavy Lorica Segmentata 6 33.8 $884
Mitheral Heavy Lorica Segmentata. 8 19.5 $17,200
Heavy Mitheral shirt 7/2 11.3lb $11,300
Heavy Very Fine Corselet 7 27.3 $8450

I like the rules presented for weight reduction and DR increase in GURPS Dungeon Fantasy.
