Default potions and other stims

Munchkin has a lot of cards with potion and other one-shot items..
on almost every item the description says: usuable on either side.

some of my friends are saying that either side means u can use it on yourself
or another player to help.

some other friends are saying u can use it on players aswell as on the monsters.

wich explanation of the description usuable on either side is the right one?

When in combat, there's only two sides: Munchkin's and monster's. Play the "use on either side" card to enhance the combat strength of one of those 2 sides. YOU don't have to be in combat to do this. You can watch your friends fighting some huge creature and laugh as you make it +3 against them, or you can offer to help the munchkin's side for the sweet boots that they're wearing. (Booty to be received AFTER combat, of course.)
