In the Transhuman Space setting, the intelligence of AIs is limited by the power of the computers they run on. "God like AIs" probably need IQs of 20+, and there's no established way in the setting, as of 2100, to build the computers to run them.

In my QRA campaign, there was an attempt to build a much smarter AI by combining human mind emulation with many xoxes of an emergent SAI. It was pretty smart, but vastly over-confident, and had almost no ability to anticipate the reasoning of lesser minds. It was shut down before it got very far, because the xoxing made it extremely illegal. Its plans to rule the Solar System were . . . not very good.

One thing worth remembering about all kinds of AI singularity predictions, is they are built on the assumption that some sort of vast increase in intelligence is *possible*. That's purely an assumption - one we know for certain is false for at least some sorts of proposed routes like running your AI on faster and faster computer hardware (there are known physical limits to computer speed like the speed of light and the size of atoms). Lots of things in the real universe have plateaus, there's no particular reason intelligence can't be one of them.

Even there is no limit, there is no guarantee that an intelligence can *always* figure out a way to construct a superior intelligence. Indeed given that the only example we have (humans) has so far failed to do so, despite quite a lot of effort by this point, this seems a particularly optimistic assumption. Remember any point along the chain at which an AI fails to design something superior stops the runaway to godhood, so you really need that guarantee, just reasonable likelihood won't take you to infinity.

Or that increasing intelligence is actually the key to solving problems. For a lot of problems the real obstacles are gathering and processing the data, not that they require any special genius to solve.

Poul Anderson used that theme in at least one story.

Also, for all the dancing around it that the AI researches do, we really don't know how the brain works. That is, we don't know exactly what is happening when the brain assembles several facts and reaches a conclusion based on them. It's hard to write an algorithm to do something that you can't even define.
