edit: it's likely the version I first played was Tom's, though. When you are 8 years old, you don't look at those details. :-)

Re: When did you first play TFT?
1979. I returned home from my first orthodontist appointment to find Melee and Wizard in the mailbox. Good times, but we had to play with 5 sided dice. We couldn't afford the 6 siders...

Re: When did you first play TFT?
Happy to oblige. ;)
I have a campaign in mind and a regular group that currently plays GURPS. We'll definitely give it a strong test. :)

Re: When did you first play TFT?
I voted for 1980s, although I think it was precisely 1980. So the earlier part of the decade. Getting back into it now.

Re: When did you first play TFT?
A friend got me hooked with Death Test, in 1979 or 1980 in Sweden. It was my first contact with RPGs. Have been playing RPGs ever since. :-)

Re: When did you first play TFT?
It was 1978. I loved the microgames line, although most of the none Steve Jackson ones were awful, because they were so cheap and I was a very broke 11 year old. But the game shop owner had basically forced me to buy Ogre a few months earlier and I loved it and the price was very right. So the moment I saw Melee I had to get it. It's held a special place for me ever since. Evil Stevie produced 5, or 3 depending on how you count, of those little Ziploc baggie games that I have spent countless hours playing in the decades since, those being Ogre, GEV, Melee, Wizard and Car Wars. But Melee/Wizard/TFT were ones I've missed for many years.

Re: When did you first play TFT?
I thought I would throw this out there for everyone's amusement.
As those who follow such things know, way back in the early 80s, Guy McLimore, Dave Tepool and I formed a design company called Fantasimulations Associates. But before we actually produced any games, we paid for going to GenCon by being "Booth Monkeys" for Metagaming. I remember one year very well - it was the year that Metagaming released Treasure of the Silver Dragon. That year, GenCon was still being held at Parkside, and we stayed in a little motel right off the interstate. Silver Dragon was slightly delayed, and it arrived Thursday at the airport in Milwaukee. Guy, Dave and I ended up driving up to the airport to pick up the carton. Problem was, the games weren't yet assembled for sale. So the Carton contained flattened boxes, rule booklets, maps and a package of tiny 6 sided dice. We had the task of bringing the carton back to our hotel room and assembling all those boxes and stuffing them with the contents. And although we got to see the game before the rest of the con goers, stuffing all those boxes was mind-numbing! Not sure why I remember this, but the movie we watched on the TV in the room was "Xanadu"! All I can say is that Howard got his money's worth out of us that year! ;) |
