We didn't play Majestic Wilderlands today, so we noodled on combat options instead. We all agreed on at least one thing: a game where *anything can be attempted* is good.

A bit of a D&D summary post. The story thus far, as it were.

Anything can be attempted. This guiding principle from the old days of D&D was the topic of some active discussion last night when we didn't get enough people to play in our GM's Majestic Wilderness campaign. We all agreed we loved the Battlemaster maneuvers, but perhaps anyone should be able to try to trip someone . . .

If you like the topic above, there is a bunch more on my DnD5 page, which includes a variety of character builds at 6th level as I try and understand the 5e system, and a bunch of game mechanical stuff, including the statistics and math behind the advantaged mechanic as well as some numbers behind how the Standard Array was generated.

Back into the character generation game, this time looking at the Ranger. And yep, I was right - the Ranger in my gaming group really *is* that effective, and will become more so with Sharpshooter if he doesn't have it already.

This is a surprisingly high damage class, and depending on how you want to play it, is good enough that you're just going to want one in your party. The Hunter's Mark and Colossus Slayer combination makes even the fighter-based Archery option (which ain't bad) pale in comparison.

And the Ranger's a sneaky bastard on top of all that.

I do a character build for a rogue assassin, and realize that my perception of their combat prowess may well have been exaggerated.

I saw a thread on one of the D&D reddits that brought up Multiple Attribute Dependency. In some places I've seen it held out as a bad thing.

I love it, and here's why.

Somewhat unformed thoughts on how one could apply the same concepts behind multiple attribute dependency to weapon differentiation.

If this seems like I might be postponing delving into the character build options for spellcasting classes . . . you might be right.

The Sorcerer is one of the spellcasting classes in D&D5 whose spell lists goes all the way up to 9th level. That is, they can be totally nasty with the right circumstances. And the spell lists are broad enough that you can specialize within types to make for a well thought out roleplaying or character schtick if you wish.

I'm actually going to take that route a bit, in that my particular choices of race and magical origin really point in a particular direction. Also, the point of this series is a bit of the munchkin "do lots of damage" quest, just to see what's possible.

I get thinking in the car about how slow a human is moving while Dashing in D&D. This leads me to explore the concept of trading HP for moving farther than the dash action.

Wackiness ensues.

Well that would reduce the already dubious utility of bows.

How so? The ranger/hunter in our party is our most effective damage dealer. With Sharpshooter, he can hit to 600', so I'm not sure where you're coming from on that one.
