Default [ISW] Infinite Interstellar Wars

Predestination bites. Knowing how things are going to turn out really takes the edge of a gaming setting. So....starting from 2170...the "default present", how many different futures could we possibly throw at our hypothetical PCs?

The Vilani rediscover their planet sterilisation tactics of bygone years and use their superior numerical base to crush the Terrans.

The only survivors from the destruction of the Sol system is a rag tag fleet lead by the last Terran battle-carrier... can't think of a ship name ;-)

I'm pretty sure it was called the Heart of Gold.

The Large Magellanic. Terran battle-carriers were named for galaxies. ;-)

Other ships in the class were Milky Way, Andromeda, Cartwheel, Pinwheel, Sombrero, Sunflower, Whirlpool, and Tadpole.

The Vilani Imperium, steadily decaying in political strength after the disappearance of Strephon is challenged and overthrown by the Naval forces of the Galian Federation (Gateway sector). The vacuum of power in Core sector emboldens members of small empires in the Spinward Marches to expand their territories and influence. The Zhodani Consulate sponsors survey missions into the Gvurrdon The Terran Federation regains a solid control over the Solomani Rim and expands coreward into the Diaspora. Colonies and outposts of the Third Imperium recede into small regions of the Old Expanses. Real Strephon is accused of treason by the Imperial Moot and flees to Dlan in Ilelish (1021). Dulinor and Strephon become allies and create a new pocket Empire ruled by corporations. They are eventually crushed by neighboring empires in Dland and, with their supporters, become refugees.

Alt 1: The Vilani were from a world still inside the Solomani Rim sector (but further to coreward than Terra). Their empire isn't that big, and the Terrans conquer them after a few more interstellar wars. Beyond their sector-sized empire lies unexplored space.

Alt 2: The Vilani are humanoid, but totally unrelated to humans. In fact, Grandfather and the Ancients never existed, the Droyne died out a few hundred millenia ago, no humans were seeded across Charted Space. Everything else transpires as in canon, but there are no minor human races, and the Zhodani are also non-human.

OK, how about this. Someone attacks the Vilani Empire from the other side and THEY are the ones who grab all that territory that formed the Ramshackle Imperium. Experiencing less warfare, the Confederation isn't so militaristic and never ends up putting a crown on someone's head.

Another one:

The Interstellar Wars end in stalemate. Terrans discover J3, Vilani sue for peace, and they pull back from Terran space by at least a subsector and leave the Terrans alone. The First Imperium doesn't fall, Terrans don't take over. The Terrans end up having a frosty relationship with the Vilani Imperium, but they make their own empire that expands mostly to Rimward instead of into the 'occupied' space of the First Imperium.
