Unlimited Power
Unlimited Power: What can you do with it?
So the big bad guy in one of my campaigns is pretty nasty. He's harvested the souls of dozens (in some games I've run, thousands) of worlds. Let's call is an Energy Reserve of 1,000,000,000 at least. (And that's assuming he can only get 1 point of energy per soul). What kinds of things would you let him do with all of this awesome power? Would you put any sorts of limits on it? Could he turn a 1d innate attack into a billion dice of damage? I've been using the rules for Draw Power as a guideline for how much energy a creature can actually safely channel. This means that although he has access to a billion energy he might not be able to channel it all at once safely. Spells, Enchantments, and Extra Effort should all be possible. Godlike Extra Effort is almost required to make use of this much power. Do you guys put any limits on Godlike Effort? What about Area Spells? Should there be a limit to what he can effect or can he just set an entire world ablaze? Any other thoughts or suggestions? |

Re: Unlimited Power
Maybe he is constantly spending his energy to keep himself from the sideeffects of being so evil.
Preventing divine celestial beings from summoning him into prisons and the whatnot. Maybe theres little limit to his power in terms of influencing stuff and casting spells, but in doing so he opens vulnerabity in other fronts |

Re: Unlimited Power
This is one of those questions that draws the unhelpful answer, "what do you want him to do?" It's your campaign and your BBEG. The right answer is that he's a plot device to drive the game along. If that involves torching worlds, he torches worlds. If that means he has fairly limted attacks and defenses so a party of PCs can take him down in personal combat, then that's what he can do.

Re: Unlimited Power
Why bother to express it in game mechanics at all? it has dominion over the souls of billions and an energy reserve in the millions... I would think a 5 million plus point npc can do anything you want.

Re: Unlimited Power
The limit is probably his imagination, which can be very limiting.
I have one friend who can't think of anything more creative then "bigger boom". Her brother on the other hand could come up with downright terrifyingly potent plans using very little. So what is this person like? Are they creative? Destructive? Manipulative? Do they think inside the box or have they never seen cardboard before? Did he get the power by being incredibly brilliant, stupidly lucky, or some combination? Edit Also, what options are available? Anything in Magic? Anything in Basic within a certain theme? Syntactic Magic? What are his goals? You have a character with a lot of power, but what they can do with it really depends on what they want, what they are willing to do, and what external resources are available. I'm up for the challenge, but need more details :) Last edited by Tuoni; 04-27-2012 at 12:46 PM. |

Re: Unlimited Power
On another note
Hasnt he "won" already ? If he can explode worlds and rules over billions of souls whats stopping him from destroying all his enemies in the course of his existence and be effectivelly without a match |

Less silly response: Just because one can blow up a planet, doesn't mean one has reached the top of the food chain. The PC's would presumably be at a combined power level to match him. Or at least be capable of utilizing something that can. Last edited by Tuoni; 04-27-2012 at 12:57 PM. |

Re: Unlimited Power
GURPS Powers, p. 161. It's regular powers Extra Effort, but you can spend more than 1 FP to reduce the Will penalty or increase the effect, and there's no cap on the amount you can increase your ability.
GURPS Supers discusses a number of instances in which godlike extra effort would be appropriate and offers some additional ways to achieve "godlike" effects. |
